My mom used to say, “Stick with the guy that loves you, not the guy you love. Because the guy that loves you will go to the moon and back for you, but the guy you love will only love you on his terms.”

And the older I get, the more I understand what she meant.

Because the man who truly loves you doesn’t make you question your worth. He doesn’t leave you guessing, waiting, or begging for the bare minimum. His love is steady, consistent, and intentional. He shows up for you not just when it’s easy, but when it’s hard. He chooses you every single day without making it feel like a competition.

But the one you love? Sometimes that love feels like a constant chase. You give more, try harder, hope longer… thinking one day he’ll meet you where you are. But love shouldn’t feel like something you have to earn. It shouldn’t feel one-sided or conditional.

She’s always said a woman can grow to love someone, deeply and genuinely, when she feels safe, respected, and valued. But a man… a man usually knows from the beginning. He either sees you and chooses you fully, or he doesn’t—and no amount of love you pour into him will change that.

And maybe that’s the hardest lesson to accept… that love isn’t about who you feel the strongest for, but about who treats your heart with the most care.

So choose the one who loves you in a way that feels peaceful, not confusing. The one who doesn’t just say it, but proves it in a hundred quiet ways.

Wait for the person who shows you what true, genuine, whole, godly love feels like. Don’t settle for half-hearted affection or words without action. Wait for the one who loves you with intention, who prays for you, and with you. Someone who sees your flaws and loves you not in spite of them, but through them—because godly love is patient, forgiving, and real.

This kind of love isn’t just about butterflies and grand gestures. It’s about the quiet moments—the steady hand when you’re anxious, the gentle words when you’re hurting, the willingness to listen when you need to speak your heart. It’s someone who lifts you up when life gets heavy and celebrates your victories as if they were their own.

A godly love is rooted in respect, honesty, and selflessness. It’s two people choosing each other every day, even when it’s hard. It’s apologies and forgiveness, laughter and tears, growing together and putting God at the center of it all. It’s praying for each other’s dreams, holding each other accountable, and building a relationship that reflects grace and faith.

Wait for the person who reminds you that you are worthy of being loved deeply and wholly. Someone who inspires you to become the best version of yourself, who doesn’t try to change you but encourages you to grow. Someone who is your safe place, your partner, your best friend.
