Beyond the wide-angle lens: Capturing the soul of a space.

It’s always refreshing to step outside the "traditional" real estate photography box. Great architectural photography isn't just about documenting a room—it’s about capturing how a space actually feels.
I captured this at La Purisima Mission State Historic Park using a handheld Canon R5 and a 50mm f/1.2 prime lens. This is a complete 180 from the ultra-wide 15–24mm look often used in the industry. By using a tighter focal length, the space feels more natural and balanced—true to how the human eye actually experiences it.
The challenge? Correctly exposing a single image in these lighting conditions. Balancing bright highlights with deep textures while shooting handheld requires a mix of technical precision and the right professional gear to preserve the true atmosphere.
I believe quality imagery should feel authentic, timeless, and true to the design itself. Because in the end, it’s not just about a room—it’s about the story it tells.

Did you know that many AI virtual staging tools actually regenerate the entire image?

Programs like ChatGPT, Nano Banana, and other AI staging tools don’t simply add furniture to a photo. Instead, they recreate the entire image to look similar to the original while adding furnishings. In the process, architectural and physical elements of the home can be unintentionally altered or misrepresented.

This is exactly the kind of issue addressed by California’s new Assembly Bill 723 (AB723).

At West Coast Images, our editing enhances photos by brightening interiors, correcting color casts, and bringing in properly exposed windows—but we always maintain the authenticity of the original image.

When we provide virtual staging, we manually place furniture onto the actual photograph rather than regenerating the image with AI. This preserves the integrity of the home while helping buyers visualize the space.

We also clearly label staged images so viewers know when virtual staging has been used.
