The camera hadn’t been out-of-the-bag in a few weeks, but when I saw this mushroom cluster while taking my walk Monday, thought I’d return later and take a photo. I did return Wednesday, but without a polarizer, and the glare from the mushrooms’ surfaces was overwhelming. The resulting photo was crap; delete! Jane and I returned Thursday, this time with a polarizer, and got a respectable photo. Jane found this black “room” which we also found interesting.

The accompanying piece is a composite of two photos I took in New Mexico, one in 2017 and the other in 2025. One image is of a shadow, of a fence, on an adobe building and may have been the first photo I ever took in New Mexico; the fence and adobe screamed New Mexico. I never did anything with that 2017 image but never forgot it. The second photo was part of a “billboard” in Chimayo that had more to do with somebody’s expression than it did with advertising. For whatever reason, I had an epiphany this morning and came up with an idea on how to use the fence shadow picture. I did little post processing, after blending, other than add some texture and a vignette. Now the question, because I used someone else’s art but created something different, is the accompanying piece now my work?

Before Mackinac Island, we stayed at a “mom and pop” motel in Tawas Bay, MI. The motel had a small beach right on Tawas Bay and while in Tawas Bay, we spent a lot of time on that beach. One morning we spotted some roses floating on the Bay and drifting their way to the beach. I grabbed the camera and maybe took 50 frames from all angles and positions. The frame posted here is with the rose partly on the sand and partly in the water. So how did the roses find their way onto the water and why? A rose half afloat and half beached, what’s that all about?

Various photos of the Grand Hotel’s front porch complete with its iconic rocking chairs, geraniums, and flags. You could find me rocking each morning, just after the coffee shop opened at 6:30, with cup and camera in hand; and after dinner, same porch, watching the day wind down.

No trip to Mackinac Island is complete without a visit to the Butterfly House. I took a few butterfly photos, but it was this lone daisy that captured my attention. I’ve been looking for years for that lone daisy that stood apart from its surroundings and found it while sitting with my grandson admiring the butterflies. Didn’t need to get off the bench for this shot. Except for some dodging. very little post capture editing.

After a detour, a return to the “Driftless!” Right along MN Route 44/U.S. Route 52 in Canton, MN sits a 1949 Buick Roadmaster. Per the owner it still purrs, but only forward. One of the reasons the state of Minnesota has issues with the sedan being on the highway, is the vehicle’s inability to go in reverse when needed, but there are other issues. As usual I focused on the auto’s shiny details and textures, and it was 30 minutes down the road before I realized I didn’t take a photo of the entire car. It will likely be positioned in the same spot next June.

Back to the “Driftless.” The Immaculate Conception Church in Wexford, Allamakee County, Iowa. We have driven past this church numerous times over the years and finally decided to take a couple of photos. The church sits above one of those classic Iowa backroads near the Mississippi but out of view from the river. Looks like it could be a candidate for a good autumn photo. Hard to go into an art gallery in northeast Iowa and not see someone’s painted interpretation. Irish surnames on the older tombstones.

The Thurston Classic Hot Air Balloon Festival has been held annually, in Meadville, since 1988. I don’t get particularly excited about photographing the balloons, but when I can sit in my dining room, open the window, remove the screen, and shoot, I will. Photo taken yesterday morning.
