“The Guardian” - 12” x 9” soft pastel on Pastel Premier Italian Clay tone paper using a variety of pastel brands. I finished this painting in my studio after capturing the “bones” of the piece & experiencing the sights & sounds of the scene in person while painting plein air last weekend at the Northwest Pastel Society “Paint Out” event held at the beautiful Ridgefield National Wildlife Refuge near Ridgefield, WA. It was a very enjoyable & relaxing way to spend the day & I was able to visit with some of the other participating artists as well as hikers & “birders” who were using the trail where I chose to paint from. I am grateful to those members of the Northwest Pastel Society who organized the event & made it possible. Who knew there was such a beautiful & quiet place filled with these majestic oak trees just a stone’s throw away from the hustle & bustle of I-5.

“The Lower Shed” - 9” x 12” soft pastel on Pastel Premier Italian Clay tone 8 ply board using a variety of pastel brands. The scene was created from a personal reference photo taken outside of Perrydale, OR. “The lower shed…a Century farm…just down the hill…next to the pond…hidden from sight behind the old barn. A few steps to walk…now a few steps too far. The shed once a refuge…a tool bench and stove…a place with a purpose…make something work again from something old. The life of a farmer…their chores never end…finish them for one day then do them again. A carpenter, mechanic, a plumber, a vet….farmers learn quickly to wear every hat. The crickets are still chirping…the songbirds still sing…memories like treasures…still live in their dreams.

One of my favorites from a couple of years back…this soft pastel painting, “Stubble & Gold”, is based on a scene I photographed in the fields behind our backyard in McMinnville, OR. It sold at the 2024 Northwest Pastel Society’s 38th Annual Open International Juried Exhibition which was held at the Matzke Fine Art Gallery and Sculpture Park located on Camano Island north of Seattle, WA. Please plan to visit my new website at nwfineart-photography.com to view this & other samples of my artwork & photography where you can sign up to receive email announcements of my newly created work & journal entries.

I am honored & humbled to learn that my pastel painting “The Drive Home” was selected for the 2nd PLACE award in DAKOTA ART PASTELS SECOND QUARTER 2026 Juried Competition in the Emerging Artists Category.

Judging Statement and Award Comments by Pirkko Mäkelä-Haapalinna, PSA/MP - Dakota 2nd Quarter 2026 Competition Judge:

“The composition of this landscape together with skillful linework of the fields leads the viewers eye very effectively. The painting is atmospheric and magical. It gives the impression that there is more than what meets the eye. Subtle colors give space for the golden clouds perfecting the relationship between the sky and landscape.”

I genuinely appreciate having one of my pastel paintings selected for this award. Many thanks to the team at Dakota Pastels for all that they do for aspiring pastel artists like myself & to the 2nd Quarter judge, Pirkko Makela-Haapalinna, for her time/effort involved with the difficult task of making the award selections.

“Lavender Memories III” - 6” x 6” soft pastel on Pastel Premier Italian Clay tone paper using a variety of pastel brands & pastel pencils. This was my 3rd plein air piece of a series which were all painted at Lavender Vale Farms located outside of McMinnville, OR. I was the only artist at the farm again for the 2nd day in a row…it was a bit of a scorcher which likely explains why more people were not out painting. I took a different approach this year, creating small scale pieces which I could finish comfortably in spite of the heat. I am learning that I don’t have the same stamina which I may have had in years past. I have come to appreciate my collapsable canvas wagon for hauling all of my painting supplies to/from my vehicle to/from the site where I am painting…simple pleasures 🙂. Thank goodness for sunscreen! I am looking forward to taking part in the upcoming 2026 NW Lavender Festival & Plein Air Paint Out Art Show being held at the Chehalem Cultural Center in Newberg, OR. There will be an Artist’s Reception/Awards Ceremony on Friday evening, 7/10. The Festival & Art Show will continue on Saturday, 7/11 & Sunday, 7/12.

“Lavender Memories II” - 6” x 6” soft pastel on Pastel Premier Italian Clay tone paper using a variety of pastel brands & pastel pencils. I created this plein air painting at Lavender Vale Farms located just outside of McMinnville, OR. I had this charming farm all to myself today while enjoying the solitude & the quiet. “Lavender Memories” - 6” x 6” soft pastel on Pastel Premier Italian Clay tone paper using a variety of pastel brands. I enjoyed spending the afternoon at Lavender Vale Farms just outside of McMinnville, OR. It was a memorable plein air outing with a strong gust of wind knocking over my easel & spilling my 1/2 box set of Blue Earth pastels across the grass…I followed that up by having the side table on my folding chair collapse spilling my 96 piece set of Nupastels onto the ground. I was determined to enjoy my outing despite these setbacks…glad I hung in & got my hands dusty while taking in the quiet surroundings. Looking forward to taking part in the upcoming 2026 NW Lavender Festival & Plein Air Paint Out Art Show being held at the Chehalem Cultural Center in Newberg, OR. There will be an Artist’s Reception/Awards Ceremony on Friday evening, 7/10. The Festival & Art Show will continue on Saturday, 7/11 & Sunday, 7/12.
