This rock formation in the Willamette National Forest doesn’t have an official name on the map. It’s picked up a few unofficial names over the years, but if you had the chance to name it, what would you call it?

The Box Canyon Guard Station is another interesting piece of Forest Service history tucked away along the Aufderheide Scenic Byway.

The station was built in 1933 by the Civilian Conservation Corps and was used as a home for Forest Service fire guards. These were basically the early smoke chasers. When a lookout spotted smoke, the fire guard would head into the forest to find the fire and, if possible, start fighting it before it could grow.

The cabin is still here today and can be rented for an overnight stay. It’s a pretty rustic setup with two twin beds, a sofa bed, a wood stove, table and chairs. There’s also a fire ring for when fire restrictions allow, a picnic table, outhouse and a horse corral outside.

There’s no electricity, firewood or potable water, so you need to bring your own supplies, including plenty of water.

It sleeps up to four people and is generally open from early May through the end of October.

A pretty neat place to check out. If the cabin is occupied when you visit, please give the guests their space and respect their privacy.

The much-needed rain we’ve been getting this morning has been fantastic.

For those who may have forgotten, rain is that magical stuff that falls from the sky, makes everything wet, and apparently still exists. We’ve been waiting for it.

This is pretty cool and definitely not what I expected to see. I put the 360 camera inside a burned-out, hollowed-out tree and didn’t even notice this while I was there. I only spotted it later when I got home and watched the footage.

Is it a bird’s nest, a bee’s nest, or something else? Anyone know?

This wilderness creek was cold. You could feel the chill in the air coming off the water as you got closer. The water was rushing over rocks and logs, and the sound of it moving through the forest was perfect.

The Deep Creek Fire is now estimated at 60 acres and burning on steep, fire-scarred terrain in the Gales Fire footprint northeast of Lowell. Firefighters are expecting an active day, with air attack and helicopters planned once conditions allow. Crews are working to build control lines ahead of a cold front expected to bring rain tomorrow.

A road closure is being developed for parts of Forest Service Roads 18 and 1839. The public is asked to avoid the area while firefighting operations continue. Smoke will be visible from nearby communities.

Keep your drones on the ground and out of the fire area. If you fly, they can’t.

Flying a drone that interferes with firefighting operations can result in fines of up to $20,000.
