A clever little wedding at Cove Creek Lodge on a Friday...

Guests stayed in the hotel rooms, a BBQ was planned for the next day. There's an outdoor pool, lakefront space with kayaks and canoes...a full Deep Creek weekend to be had! And it all started with a ceremony, dinner and dancing on Friday night.

Married in the courthouse on Tuesday and frolicking in the water on Wednesday. 🥰

Being invited in by Abigail and Jay for their Deep Creek wedding was an inspirational treat. The old courthouse + her vintage feel had my photo brain quickly spinning. The quiet of the courthouse also influenced and we eventually found it matched their photo personalities well. Enter moody vibes. 😎

Then came waterfall day! Gray conditions, a quiet forest and an opportunity to get in the water. What a way to marry! 💪🥳

There's another round of minis happening at the colorful stairs and yellow wall at The Gallery Shop & $MART ART Spaces in downtown Oakland and I think these could be especially cool for local pros needing to update their headshots...

Picture it! You looking like you're in a cover band photo like Terah and Eric in photo #1. You looking playful and happy like me in photo #2. We can also go moody like in photo #3.

Friday, October 2nd 9am - 1pm
-30 minute time slot

These were taken in August but surfing in September is still a possibility...

It's cold and gray and a little rainy this week at Deep Creek, but sunshine is forecasted to return. Also, September is slower and quieter around here...definitely more water room for anyone who wants to boat and surf for photos.

Photos like the first one will always get me. A moment noticed and captured that no one else realized was happening. Subjects in the foreground framing the focus in the background. A snapshot, a moment...something real and undirected.

And a little film edit to really land the vibe. 😎

There were lots of these snapshots/moments throughout my time with the B Family, likely because of the young kids and their desire to hang about...AND their parents and grandparents ability to just hang about with them.

That's one of the key factors in capturing moments like the first photo. Everyone involved has to be willing to forget about posing and smiling for the camera. They just need to be willing to have little chit chats, sit on the ground, blow bubbles, snuggle the kids, and hang about. 🥰

Maybe I'm sharing too many of these photos because I'm not a senior photographer but for our lovely friend Ava, I make an exception...

An exception in both capturing and sharing because I could just keep these to myself. But cycling through our shoots together and editing the photos has been breathing some new life into my photography. It's been surprisingly inspiring!

I stopped photographing seniors years ago because I'm not as comfortable posing one person as I am multiple persons. I've found it easier to create interest and connection when there's more than one person involved. And while I think that may still be true, photographing Ava solo has been a good challenge. It's also made me realize that maybe I need to give seniors another try.

The light we had at the river, the style we had on the golf course and the simple sometimes edgy femininity we had at the top of the mountain make me wonder what else is out there...what have I been missing by saying no to senior photography!?

There's value in a well-lit, straight-forward portrait like the first photo. But there's also value in a boldly-lit, creative portrait like the second photo. Photographing Ava has allowed me to explore both, and then some...

Every day that I'm a photographer is a day that I'll have to worry about the weather. Sometimes I try to play weather man and predict when and if the rain will come. Sometimes I get it right and sometimes, like with the L Family, I got it wrong...

I normally say no way jose to covered decks because of the darkness that falls underneath them, but we had no choice here (and I really thought we had timed it right to dodge the rain!) So I brought the family as close to uncovered space as possible for the best light, which meant I was partially in the rain.

High fives to the L Fam for being willing to cram. 💪
