The morning after we arrived to horse camp, it was time to wrangle the horses. The herder boys drove them into a wooden corral where we set to work roping them. The rope was made of soft leather, making it far more limp than its westernized counterpart, and much harder to use. The Mongolians tended to be much more successful in capturing the horses than us travelers.

Our two days of intensive driving left us at horse camp, three gers nestled at the edge of the steppe with an epic view of snowcapped mountains. It was home to several wild herder boys and their sweet mother. The horses were nowhere to be seen upon our arrival, but there were plenty of other animals to be cared for; we helped to water them and also helped ourselves to snuggling whatever animals would let us.

The first portion of our journey to the land of the reindeer riders included two days of off-road driving. Once I was loaded up with dramamine to stave off motion sickness, it was overall not a bad way to see the countryside, and it certainly gave us a good appreciation of how far off the grid we were headed.
