What’s Happenin’?

I’ll tell you what. My website is under redesign by in Tyler, Texas. This is a section of the banner page. I can’t tell you how responsive they are to my questions, comments, and requests.

Check out my website at

Be sure to take note of the upcoming OM System (Olympus) workshop!

Comment here what favorite photos of mine you’d like to see in my galleries and I’ll add them to the growing list.

Account Executive Andy Martinez connected me with web designer Sam Smith, who immediately bent to the task

They put up a “temporary” page until the redesign is complete. It includes my upcoming tours, workshops and events, along with a registration form at the bottom.

Time for Growth

Plain Chachalacas live in my friends Ann and Ernie Williams’s backyard in McAllen, Texas.
Recently, the birds had two babies and I spent some time photographing the family. One of the chicks disappeared the day before I visited, so the family consisted of the parents and chick plus an older sibling.
It took me a couple of days to capture good images, as the parents are protective and they often hid their surviving baby from sight. I used my OM-1 camera and switched back and forth between my 40-150 and 150-400mm lenses.
The days-old baby was able to follow its parents by leaping and flapping its tiny wings to jump up into the branches of native trees and shrubs in the yard.
Here, the baby imitated its parents by wiping its beak clean on the surrounding branches after eating berries and other fruit.
I am now using a QR code to connect with people and grow my business. Follow the code to get on my email list and learn about workshops, tours, and other events. You can also check out my website (ruthhoyt.com) to see upcoming tours, workshops, and more.

Hi, all, here is a short video of me talking about Southern Exposures, a youth program in Deep South Texas I've been involved with for many years. With and The Valley Land Fund. Video created by my friend and colleague Jaime Villarreal.

Happy Father’s Day!

Papa Northern Bobwhite (quail) has his work cut out for him with all these babies. There were more babies hidden in the grass behind him. If you can tolerate super-hot temperatures, it’s worth visiting the ranch; everything needs water to survive. I used my OM-1 camera and 150-400mm lens to capture the scene.

Check out my website (ruthhoyt.com) to see upcoming tours, workshops, and more. Thankfully, my recently retired friend Debbie volunteered to help me and has taken the bull by the horns and begun the process of learning one piece at a time. Thank you, Debbie!

Lyrics and melody come to mind…,“I get by with a little help from my friends…” by John Lennon/Paul McCartney.

Looking for Me?

I have been on a road trip across the country for nearly a month but I’m coming back soon. I’m working my way home over the next couple of weeks.
One of my favorite photos from this trip is a Blue Jay on Mary Ann and Joe McDonald’s deck at Hoot Hollow in McClure, Pennsylvania.
It was very curious and I captured a photo showing this. Those jays have a way of stealing my heart.

Hey There…

In this scene, the Green Jay on the right was courting the one on the left, but he fell a little bit short when he chose a very small seed as a gift for her.
As he approached, she seemed to acknowledge and accept him but then visibly changed her mind as he sidled up to her. She raised her head in protest to his advances.
I captured the scene and then drew from it with a variety of colored pencils on Grafix double-sided drafting film.
The drawing is en route to a certain individual with a birthday at the end of this week. I hope he doesn’t behave like the female Green Jay when he opens the package!

Join Us Tonight…

Check out “Capturing the Magic of West Texas,” the program Rob Doyle provides tonight at 6:30pm Central Time for TexNEP (Texas Nature & Environmental Photographers).
It’s free and open to the public. Send me a DM to request the Zoom invitation for the meeting.
In the meantime, I hope you like my photo of two male redbirds. The one on the right is easy to identify as a Northern Cardinal but the one on the left is NOT a cardinal.
It’s a male Pyrrhuloxia (pronounced peer-LOCK-see-ya), and he isn’t happy that the cardinal approached too closely.
I caught this encounter and resulting interaction on the Laguna Seca Ranch in April. The Pyrrhuloxia was sitting among some Huisache blossoms and the cardinal dropped down from above. Surprised, the Pyrrhuloxia went on the offense and literally got into the cardinal’s face. The cardinal backed off and made a quick departure.

Honored, Flattered, Excited…

Today pencil artist and friend (Bonny Snowdon) is using my Keel-billed Toucan photo taken in Costa Rica as a reference photo.
She begins conducting a multiple-week tutorial for her academy members. For me, as an academy member, it will be like having a private lesson because it’s from my photo. It also gives me no excuse for not drawing. (Uh-oh!)
I look forward to seeing this bird come off of my computer screen and onto art paper, with me creating it with my colored pencils.

Too Hot for Snow?

A couple of weeks ago I attended the OWAA (Outdoor Writers Association of America) annual conference in Casper, Wyoming. The day I flew, it was 98 degrees F at home and the temperature in Casper was 28! Too cold for me!
But I went to see wild horses with Chad Hanson .wildplaces to the Stewart Creek area of BLM (Bureau of Land Management) land. For me, this was a true adventure, both as a photographic opportunity and an experience for the senses. I particularly liked watching the interaction between the various horses.
On the way off the BLM land, the weather changed again and snow began falling madly. I saw a horse turn its back to the wind as he continued to graze. We stopped long enough for me to attempt photos; the challenge was to get the horse in focus and then not try to refocus because the snow fooled the camera. You are seeing my favorite effort from those moments.

Horsefeathers!…

Recently, I attended the OWAA (Outdoor Writers Association of America) annual conference, this time in Casper, Wyoming.
I reconnected with some, missed reconnecting with others, met some young people, networked for business, and spent quality time in the field.
When I left, I felt good about all of it except missing reconnecting with folks I’ve known since joining.
I usually don’t attend pre- or post-conference field trips but “Wild Horse Tour” grabbed my attention and shook my soul. It was limited to three people and when registration opened, I snatched the first spot.
Our trip leader, Chad Hanson .wildplaces, took us three lucky participants in his personal car to the Stewart Creek area of BLM (Bureau of Land Management) land to teach us about wild horses, and search for and photograph them. His knowledge and generous teaching spirit moved me deeply.
It motivated me to get up early the next four mornings and return to the area. The hour and a half drive to the BLM area flew, and the hours I spent with horses each morning seemed like only minutes.
I also learned about the Cloud Foundation and I support what the organization does for the wild horses.
