I completely agree that professional courtesy and communication are important in photography. That being said, I think it’s also important that assumptions aren’t made about someone’s intentions or business practices without knowing the circumstances.
In this particular situation, I was there because I was paid to photograph a specific person. While I was there, I naturally captured other moments as well. I paid to attend the event, and the photos I posted were not being offered for sale, nor did I advertise them as being for sale.
I have nothing but respect for other photographers and the work that goes into this industry. At the same time, being present at a public event and taking photographs does not automatically mean someone is attempting to interfere with another photographer’s business.
There is absolutely room for multiple photographers, and I believe we can handle situations like this through respectful communication rather than assumptions. I’m always willing to have a conversation and respect legitimate boundaries when they are communicated to me.
