A backyard wedding in Portland will get me every time, especially when it feels this personal, this moody, and this full of heart. The day began at home with the kind of slow, meaningful energy you wish you could bottle up. They got ready alongside their daughter, soaking in those quiet hours before everything began, and somewhere in the middle of it all was a daddy-daughter first look that felt so tender and grounding it seemed to hold the whole day together.

The design of it all felt equal parts elegant and effortless. An incredible wedding dress, a veil with just the right amount of drama, black suits, soft light, and those rich, overcast Portland tones that somehow make everything feel even more intimate. Their ceremony unfolded in the backyard surrounded by family and closest friends, with the kind of closeness that lets every laugh, tear, and glance land exactly where it should.

And then, just when the evening settled into that golden pocket where everyone relaxes a little deeper, the Doughnuts & Chai truck rolled up for dessert, serving handcrafted doughnuts and chai tea while guests lingered, kids played, and nobody seemed in any hurry for the night to end.

This is what I love most about an intimate Portland backyard wedding. It isn’t about stripping a wedding down. It’s about filling it with the right things.

I think it’s really easy to sit on this app while the world feels like it’s falling apart (because it probably is) and compare yourself to other artists who are better than you (or so you think).

When in fact, it’s just as easy to not take directions, dance to the beat your own drum, and keep your eyes on your own paper.

There’s plenty of room at the table for all of us to be successful and we all have different ideas of success.

I used to struggle with thinking that my version needed to match the version of photographers who I look up to and admire their art.

But what if I don’t actually want the same life as them? Or what if I wouldn’t be a good fit for their clients?
The truth is I probably don’t want it and I’m probably not the right fit!

Another truth: I’m obsessed with every single one of my couples + families and they all laugh at my cheesy grins and excessive use “yessssss”

I know it’s hard sometimes, but when you’re feeling comparative or like an imposter, I would like you to pause and think of these 3 things:

1. What am I grateful for right now in this moment?
2. What do I love about my art?
3. Where has my art taken me that I never thought I would go or where I have dreamed of going?

I’ll answer first:

1. I am so grateful that I get to run a business and show my children that you can, if fact, be whatever you want to be when you grow up.
2. I love that my art captures people’s pure joy.
3. I never thought my art would bring me an art gallery + studio in the cutest little town!

Don’t listen to everyone else’s directions all the time, the road to your map is different.

Save this for when need/want a pick me up 🤗

If it’s slightly grainy and a little imperfect, I probably love it more.

There are seasons where it feels heavy to log on.
Heavy to scroll.
Heavy to witness the news cycle and still try to show up with your whole heart.

And then there are afternoons like this.
Two women in love, tangled up in each other, laughing in that way that makes you forget there’s anything loud or cruel happening outside the frame. Just softness. Just connection. Just this.

A couple months ago, one of my kids came out to me.

And the thing that undid me in the best way? They told me they already knew I was a safe place to land. They see the couples and families I photograph. They see the way I talk about love. They see who walks through my lens and into our lives. And they knew.

That is the quiet power of showing up.
Not perfectly. Not performatively. But consistently. Documenting love in all its forms. Celebrating families that don’t fit in one tidy box. Making space at the table. Making space in the frame.

It can feel defeating right now. It can feel scary. It can feel like every time you open your phone you’re bracing yourself.

But I have to believe this:
Showing up matters.
Staying connected matters.
Photographing women in love in a field somewhere in the PNW matters.
Raising kids who know they are safe matters.

To quote Bad Bunny, “The only thing more powerful than hate is love.”

And listen… I may just be a girl with a camera and dad-cam tendencies, but this little business will always fight for humanity and dignity. It will always make room. It will always be extremely gentle with your love.

There is good out there. I see it every single week.

And it will prevail.
