Professional Photographer
Steve has been interested in photography since he was 8 years old when he received his first camera for his birthday. Being a Polaroid camera, he had the luxury of reviewing his work just minutes after snapping the shutter. His grandfather was a professional portrait photographer, so he’s been around photography all of his life. He continued to expand his knowledge in 35mm, and medium format photography and was developing his own film and printing photos in the darkroom at age 13. In high school and college, he expanded into large format studio photography which made him a more versatile photographer. To Steve, photography is very magical anyway. It can reveal things that the naked eye just can’t discern, while at the same time exhibiting emotions to the viewers. “There is nothing more exciting that capturing that special moment in time that would have been lost forever if someone wasn’t there to record it.”
He started his freelance photography business in 1991 after winning a photography contest held by The Charlotte Observer earlier that year. His concentration was on photojournalism and portraiture which also translated well into his event photography business. In 2003 he made the switch to digital photography, and his passion for photography had increased even more. “Digital photography is so much more efficient than film. One can review their images instantly, make a few corrections in Photoshop if necessary, and have the final prints ready in just minutes, as compared to hours or even days with film”, says Steve. Steve also freelances for various media publications shooting professional sports including the Carolina Panthers, and the Charlotte Hornets. He is also known to shoot our local colleges and bowl games as well. His work has also been published internationally, as he has had the opportunity to shoot in Europe and Asia as well. Steve is also a photography instructor for the Mint Hill Art Gallery, where he assists other budding photographers to achieve their goals in the ever changing world of digital photography. This includes workshops, and one-on-one personal training.
