I’ve made the difficult decision to close my photography business, Whitney Gray Photography, after 14 years. What a rewarding, exciting journey it has been!
Looking back on the past 14 years, it feels like a crazy dream! It has been a challenging, intense, fast-paced way to pay the bills. Certainly never boring! Maybe it was an advantage being 43 when I started because I had nothing to lose by trying. If I had let myself think too long, I could have talked myself out of so many intimidating situations and missed out on the really FUN stuff!
Thank you to Barbara Richards, former senior art director at Belk, who started it all by taking a chance on me. Without you, I’m convinced Whitney Gray Photography never would have happened.
Thank you to my clients for choosing me! It was my honor and pleasure to photograph you.
Thank you to my wedding clients for trusting me to capture your most precious memories on one of the most important days of your lives. It was my honor to witness those sacred moments.
Thank you, Dr. Steve Patty and his wife Dia (Union Oral Surgery), for all of your business over the years. You have been one of my most loyal clients. I smile when I think of working with you!
Special thanks to Andy Calhoun, retired CEO of the YMCA of Greater Charlotte, for connecting me with the fabulous Molly Thompson, which was the beginning of one of my favorite corporate working relationships. Every assignment for the Y was unique, from Camp Harrison to events to programs like Y Readers and Adaptive Water Skiing, but they all had one thing in common. It was so rewarding to photograph the “smiling, happy Y people” on a mission to impact our Charlotte community. I left every shoot inspired and thankful the Y is making a difference in people's lives.
Thank you to my mom, Valerie Fox, for your enthusiastic support and encouragement! I really appreciate you welcoming my clients into your home and allowing me to use the farm. Shooting at the incredibly beautiful Fox Farms was the backbone of my business and I am forever grateful. Thanks, Mom!
And last but certainly not least, a million thanks to my sweet husband, Jim Gray. I couldn’t have done any of this without you by my side. You have been my right-hand man, doing whatever needed to be done. What fun we had!!!
My advice: Take pictures! Capture those fleeting moments so they can live on forever!
On to the next adventure!

This was one of the hardest jobs I’ve ever photographed: I took pictures of the evidence in Rae Carruth’s trial for Cherica Adams’ murder for a TV documentary. In fact, I almost didn’t do it and negotiated what I would and wouldn’t photograph because I didn’t want to be a part of something exploitive. It was very disturbing and emotional, seeing all of the evidence and trial exhibits. My sweet husband, Jim, helped me get through it, as usual! Thank you, for all of your support!!

Another flashback photography story that seems surreal now: On February 28, 2011, Paper Tongues opened for Linkin Park in Phoenix and they asked me to photograph it from the STAGE. In the dark. With lights flashing. While looking through a viewfinder! So I was scared to death that I might trip and fall in front of 20,000+ people! It’s a miracle I didn’t faint because I know I didn’t breathe for at least 30 minutes! I bet those kids were wondering who that old lady was stumbling around on the stage... haha @ Phoenix, Arizona
