Blue Ridge Parkway and Skyline Drive from Afton on Sunday: Absolutely beautiful. Icicles formed the figure of an angel, a cyclist braved the ice, and the Full Snow Moon shone above the mountains.

Hiking conditions are currently hazardous, so I opted for a 6-mile walk along the Drive for photography. Trails are coated in ice-packed snow and are extremely slippery. Even with ice cleats, hiking should only be attempted by experienced winter hikers equipped with proper gear and emergency supplies.

Nature’s warning sign. 🌙✨ Caught this stunning Lunar Corona, Northeaster is on its way. These rings form when moonlight diffracts through tiny ice crystals in clouds pushing ahead of the storm. Blue on the inside, red on the outside, and snow on the horizon. ❄️

Virginia Beach Oceanfront! Unbelievable to witness the Aurora on the beach. The ship passing by is Royal Caribbean's Vision of the Seas.

Photography hike, down the Crusher Ridge Trail to photograph the three PATC cabins, then back up to Stony Man Overlook just after sunset. Above 2,000 feet, the trees were bare, offering great winter views along the ridge; below that elevation, they were a beautiful, vibrant yellow. Stats: 9 miles total, 2,100 feet elevation gain. Added 2.4 new miles for the Shenandoah 500 challenge (now at 265/500).

I joined the Potomac Appalachian Trail Club (PATC) earlier this year. PATC protects and maintains a vast network of connected trails, cabins, and wild spaces stretching from Pennsylvania to Northern Virginia, including Shenandoah National Park. I submitted photos to be used as awards given to exceptional volunteers and am honored to have two of my photos framed and given as awards this year. The photos are of Pain Run Trail and the Appalachian Trail at Pinnacles, both in Shenandoah National Park. Congratulations to the recipients!

Akranesviti and Old Akranes Lighthouses in Iceland, high winds and rough seas. The wind would just about blow you over. We were so thankful to get off the cruise ship prior to the storm. I'm very pleased with how these lighthouse photos turned out. The ocean was beautiful, and angry.

Icelandic horses and a rainbow in a meadow below Akrafjall, a volcanic mountain. The Icelandic horse, a breed forged by centuries of isolation and the rugged beauty of Iceland. Slowly driving past a herd, the protective stallion races to greet us– a noble leader, always on guard, ensuring his family’s safety. A true embodiment of strength and freedom.
