I've been lucky enough to photograph hundreds (probably closing in on a thousand) weddings here in Yosemite. It never gets old - each day, even each part of the day offers something new to see, something new to experience. Once I stopped trying to photograph what I photographed yesterday and opened my eyes to the present, everything changed.

This area in Yosemite has long been a personal favorite. The mixture of towering granite, lush trees, soft afternoon light, and water (I can’t forget the water) come together to make the most perfect setting for a wedding. It’s also probably my least used ceremony location - I think this is only the second wedding I have photographed here in over twenty years. The trick is, this spot isn’t usually here.

Which brings me to the moment last night, when Tammy and Brian were married here. Everything lined up perfectly. The warm glow of the afternoon slowly washed over them as the river trickled downstream and they promised their love to each other. One of my favorite places just became their perfect place.

In the studio today I've been talking with a handful of clients about their upcoming events and how the Dome Fire, a wildfire currently burning to the South of Yosemite Valley, might impact their experience and photographs.

In short, Yosemite is a wild place often shaped by fire. Conditions are constantly changing, but currently this fire is not threatening buildings or impacting travel. What this fire is most definitely doing is pushing smoke North towards Yosemite Valley and creating dramatic skies with layers of atmosphere changing familiar views with soft, muted tones. It’s an incredible change to the scenery that reminds us of the power of nature.

Of course, for these two on their first trip to Yosemite, the morning could not have been more perfect.

It may have been a few years, but it seems like just yesterday that I joined Julia and Nick for their wedding day here in Yosemite. At least that's what they told me when they let me know they were coming back to Yosemite to celebrate their anniversary.

Catching up with former clients is one of the truest highlights of my job. Getting the chance to explore and share some of my favorite places in Yosemite is always incredible. Photographing good people like Julia and Nick, a couple that is always looking for an adventure, on their wedding anniversary? That's next level.

(Plus, there was lots of water involved.)

Yesterday was a warm day, so Kathryn and Cameron decided to duck into the shade before turning to the next chapter together.

Just a bit outside of Yosemite, this is the Mariposa County Courthouse. It's the oldest continually operating Courthouse West of the Mississippi and their perfect place to be married.

Uncontrollable joy. That's what this day is all about.

Life will always have ups and downs. But when you have your forever person standing by your side it makes those hard times a little bit easier and the good times that much sweeter. All of the experiences that we share together give us the perspective to recognize moments of pure joy and realize how beautiful this shared life can be.

Here’s to Kristin and Daniel celebrating their marriage yesterday and experiencing just how good life is when you have everything you need in your arms.

This is a special place in Yosemite that I have been coming to for years and I've been lucky enough to share it with countless couples. If you visit the same location time and and time again, you'll begin to notice the smallest of changes -- like how here, the position of the sun slides a little bit to the south each new morning at this time of year. Each day is different, it is always a new experience. It opens up new compositions, new possibilities, new wonders to share.

As I find myself once again reflecting on weddings, wedding photography, and how I fit into the small slice of time I spend with my clients, I am always brought back to the people. My secret hope has long been when I am a distant memory, after the newlyweds have enjoyed countless adventures and grown old together, that perhaps their grandchildren or even the next generation might stumble across a portrait like this and share the same amazement of a life well lived.

From behind the camera, this is a specific portrait that I've had in my head for the past few weeks. I've been lucky enough to share this location with quite a few couple in that time, creating a unique version for each couple. The portrait shown here is the result of those previous versions. There are little tweaks, small changes to the camera, adjustments to the lighting -- lessons learned to help me get even closer to the image that exists in my mind.

Looking at this image blown up in my studio, it's a portrait that invites you to join them. The magical light of the Sierra stretched across Yosemite Valley, breathing new life to this place as these two celebrate their marriage. It's also a place so familiar, even to those that haven't stood there, while being equally brand new -- the always familiar Half Dome just barely visible in the distance. Step into this place and be amazed.
