"As much as I saved him from the life he had before me, he, and the rest of my pets, have saved my life over and over. Without them, there are many times I would have taken my own life through the years, but I can't let my little pack get separated and worry they wouldn't be properly cared for or loved. They get me out of bed for the day to feed them. The dogs get me outside for fresh air. And they all love to lay right on top of me for that comforting pressure that helps to ground me." - Brenna

As the sun set on the last Sunday of May, I began thinking about Zerrik's baseball session. His last time on the field as a Mountaineer. These images smell like fresh cut grass, leather, and popcorn. They feel like heavy humid air. The sound like chants from the dugout. This is all about to change. Summer nights will never quite be the same. The lighthearted, carefree fun will give way to other responsibilities. Thank goodness photos have a way of helping us remember these moments.

"I’m not sure I have the space or time to explain how much these dogs changed my life and gave me purpose, meaning, responsibility, a direction, a simple pick-me-up, and a smile on a bad day, and how God continues to use even them to teach me lessons daily. I truly believe He put them in my path.

I was just, at the time, barely six months sober out of rehab after almost 20 years of alcohol abuse when these dogs came into my life. I laughably thought I was the one saving these dogs and giving them a second chance. Maybe I did give them a home, but I know this: my life, in some ways, has had harder moments sober than it was before. There have been some rough days.

Three and a half years later, still here, still sober, still surrounded by unfiltered, unending love without any demands in return. If that isn’t the definition of man’s best friend, I don’t know what is." - Scott

Scott's story is one of the more moving ones from Underdogs Volume 1. The value dogs bring into our lives transcends just joy and companionship. It is oftentimes a whole different level of emotional support. Sometimes we see that coming, and sometimes we don't.

Axel has diabetes. Even with multiple needle sticks every day, he never loses his happy and loving personality. At the time we did his session he was blind in one eye and going blind in the other. Despite that he hasn't slown down and is an absolute sweetheart who brings so much joy to his family.
