The March bird in the 2025 Birds of Iowa Calendar is the popular White-breasted Nuthatch. If you take in walk in wooded areas in Iowa you will see this agile bird. They get their name from their habit of jamming large nuts and acorns into tree bark, then whacking them with their sharp bill to “hatch” out the seed from the inside. The White-breasted Nuthatch breeds and lives year around in Iowa. This photo was taken at the Palo Marsh Natural Area this past year.
