Two events in which I will be participating:

1. This Saturday, Sept. 28, 10-4. Gladje Art Gallery (where my photos are framed, matted and or canvased) is hosting an outdoor art fair. I'll have a booth in the parking area behind the gallery. Gladje is huge! It has a wide assortment of art and Scandinavian imports. Multiple guest artists will have displays in the side yard and behind the building. Judy will be with me presenting her five books including a brand new one: "Gallery Days", about the history of the downtown Minneapolis Artists Quarter in the 70s and 80s. She ran the Judith Stern Gallery next to the New French Cafe. Heady times! My photos feature the North Shore, Superior Hiking Trail and St. Croix Valley landscapes.

2. Friday, Oct. 4 I'll be driving north to Two Harbors. You should too! It will likely be peak color on the North Shore. From 5-7 pm I will be at the Superior Hiking Trails Association store meeting folks and discussing the trail and my photo / history book about the trail. The store is on the lake side of Waterfront Drive in the center of downtown Two Harbors. It is 1/2 block northeast of the very popular Castle Danger Brewery (yum!) Stop in and say hi!
My book is: "The Superior Hiking Trail Story, The Trek Continues." Note: This is a special occasion event. The SHTA store normally closes at 4pm. On Friday the 4th it will close at 4 and re-open at 5pm. After 7pm I can continue chatting at the brewery for those with a thirst for a good brew.

Some calendar updates:

I'll be at the Marine Folk School Fall Fest art festival this Saturday, Sept 21. I'll have my "St. Croix Valley,....Naturally" note cards (lots of new ones!) and my "Superior Hiking Trail Story, The Trek Continues" book. Special show pricing. Judy was supposed to be presenting her new "Gallery Days" book, but the latest word is that it is awaiting shipping to us from the West Coast. Her book should arrive soon after the Marine event and in time for the Art On The Block Art Fair at Gladje Gallery in Lindstrom on Sept 28. "Gallery Days" is Judy's memoir style story of the rise and fall of the Minneapolis Artists' Quarter in the 1970s /80s. Her Judith Stern Gallery was a pioneer there selling Native American Contemporary Art. Good reading stories about all the characters she met!

I just stocked the Marine General Store and Gladje Gallery in Lindstrom with a variety of new "St. Croix Valley....Naturally" note cards. Here are a few. Some celebrate the coming fall colors, and then there is that white season that follows. Look for me with note cards and my "Superior Hiking Trail, The Trek Continues" book at the Marine Mills Folk School fest on Sept. 21. and Gladje's art fair on Sept 28.

I just stuck my two cents worth into a controversy exposed when Amy Cherwonick Ryan FACEBOOK posted a photo of Schreiber Beach, a beautiful spot on the Canadian North Shore. In the thread of comments a man, Bob, responded that she should not have done so because it would draw new people to this place and he wanted it kept a secret for the "locals."

Here is my take on that :

Amy and Bob are sharing the double edged sword. My side is with Amy. When we discover fantastic places sharing the knowledge with others is something our minds can't resist. We enjoy sharing! Sure, the extra people we turn on to the place might be too many people for some and that can be construed as negative. But the positive side of the sword makes more people love our natural world. I think that is good! Sharing the good outweighs the somewhat selfish concept of keeping the best of nature to a lucky few. I write books about sharing the best of nature. I do not apologize when a new person follows through by finding what I share and then shares it to their friends. My new book will include Schreiber Beach and the wonderful but largely unheard of Casque Isles Trail. My current book shares the wonders of the Superior Hiking Trail. The Superior Hiking Trail Story. Google it. Tons of photos shared and detailed history of a great trail.

Those Lost Trees

In my wanderings around my local state park over the years I have seen some of my favorite photo subject trees disappear. In the case of the first two images, I believe the park has a vendetta out for any tree other than oaks and other indigenous trees of the “prairie oak savanna” ideal – as recorded by the first surveyors, way back in the mid 1800s. Here are two images of what I call cedars. They did not fit the bill and were cut down by the park staff. The apple tree image is from winter, 2010. This very old tree was a remnant from when the land was farmed. I am guessing the farmer either planted the tree there or it simply grew from a tossed apple core after his lunch break. Come to the Driftless if you love the Superior Hiking Trail. That's right, I'm heading south to Whitewater State Park, but my talk / show will be about the North Shore and the history of the Superior Hiking Trail, as shown and discussed in my book, The Superior Hiking Trail Story. Many great images will be shown. 10am, Weds. July 10 at the visitor center. Photo here is not from the Superior Hiking Trail or the North Shore. It is from the Driftless Area, specifically the South Branch of the Whitewater River.

Seeking your experience with my Facebook posts. Here is a photo I took the other day of my favorite tree on my favorite farm near home. Like it or love it or hate it — the Facebook way, please. I just want to see how many people this is reaching. Also, If you saw my post about June 1st in Duluth (a book signing event) let me know. Yes or No. Facebook is suggesting that hardly anyone sees my book related posts. I am confused. I am seeking my own evidence from my Facebook Friends. Like? Love? Hate? Yes? No? Thank you!

And if you happen to be passing through Duluth before or after your hike - maybe in the middle for a lunch break at Fitgers - stop in to The Bookstore at Fitgers. I'll be signing my book between noon and 3pm. The store is huge. Lots of great books, many featuring Duluth topics. Fitgers Brew House is right there as is Trail Fitters, the best outdoor store in the area. I hope to see you there!

My book is full of those views plus the history of how the trail came to be. It's a good story. We now say over 400,000 of us use the trail each year. We (they / you) all should know this story.

My images are showing bigger and better than ever at Gladje! Gladje is the very cool art gallery in Lindstrom. I share the walls with many other talented artists. The store offers Scandinavian imports also. This is a photo of some of my photos in the gallery. They also sell my Superior Hiking Trail Story book, plus my St. Croix Valley Naturally note cards. Gladje is 1/2 block west of the Dairy Queen on Hwy 8, the main through road.
