§ Have you ever seen whales feed like this?
What is bubble net feeding?

Humpbacks dive below schools of herring and release spirals of bubbles, forming a "net" that traps the fish.

One whale often acts as the "caller," using vocalizations to drive the fish upward into the bubble trap.

This feeding strategy requires precise coordination.

Every whale has a role-some create bubbles, some herd fish, and together they lunge through the net with mouths wide open.

Bubble-net feeding is unique to certain humpback populations. Not all humpbacks know how to do it!

Witnessing this rare cooperation is a reminder of how intelligent and connected these giants are.

I love getting that rare view of humpback whale baleen — long, keratinous plates that act like a sieve, filtering out krill and small fish after massive gulps during feeding.

Words elude me in trying to convey the sensation of being submerged with orcas for the first time. It was true transcendence: encountering the ocean’s most intelligent and cunning apex predators. Swimming with orcas carries an inherent awareness of their immense power—power capable of ending one’s life in an instant. Yet, paradoxically, there is no fear, for their intelligence assures that they recognize you are not prey. Orcas embody an awe-inspiring presence that defies mere survival instincts.

Orcas are remarkably intelligent and empathetic, nurturing bonds with their families much like we do. Their profound emotional lives and complex social structures underscore the inherent cruelty of confining them to marine parks, where their natural behaviors and deep connections are severely compromised.

Let us each play our role in safeguarding the freedom and future of these magnificent creatures. Together we can make a difference

Carving the seas
I just loved the shape of this orca’s bow wave 🌊
What do you think?
Orcas create bow waves through their forward motion in the water. As they swim, their streamlined bodies push water aside, creating a pressure wave at the front (bow) of their bodies. This wave forms that characteristic V-shaped pattern seen when they move swiftly through the water. The shape of an orca’s bow wave can indicate several things, including its speed, direction, and the efficiency of its movement through the water. A well-defined, V-shaped bow wave typically suggests that the orca is swimming at a relatively high speed with minimal resistance. If the bow wave is less defined or irregular, it could indicate changes in speed, direction, or water conditions affecting the orca’s movement. Additionally, the size and height of the bow wave can provide insights into the size and power of the orca, as larger individuals or those swimming faster will typically generate larger and more pronounced bow waves. Observing the behavior of the orca in relation to its bow wave can also offer clues about its hunting strategy, social interactions, or navigation through its environment. 🤍
