Wednesday night I headed up to the Britt Car, Truck,Bike and Tractor Night Cruise with my nephew. While we didn't roll up in a classic car I did have a few classic film cameras on hand. Those being a 1955 Leica M3 and a 1970s Mamiya RB67. It's been a few years since I've been to Britt but the turnout sure did not disappoint.

Ready to start or add to your art collection? A collection of three fiber based silver gelatin Lith prints are available today at the Synergy Art Gallery in Storm Lake, Iowa. All three images where shot on 35mm black and white film with a 1955 Leica M3. The Lith process is an alternative method using what is referred to as infectious development. As the print develops the process will start to rapidly pick up often leaving a small window of time to pull or sn**ch the print. This is a visual inspection process done under dim red light. The chemistry is highly diluted and through a number of factors can produce color shifts that you see in each of these images. Because of its nature reproducing similar images is extremely difficult if not often impossible. What you are left with is a truly unique one of a kind piece of hand crafted art. I then have cut in half the negative and included it with each piece. While these art not the first lith prints I have made they’re the first available for sale. The prints are 5x7 and priced at $250 each. Available to see and purchase today in Storm Lake, Iowa.

Manson's Crash My Crater headliner Parmalee absolutely rocked the small town of Manson, Iowa. Jesse Grossnickle with Shore Side Pub & Grub you absolutely put together a night of music that many of us will not soon forget! Manson's Crash My Crater you never seem to disappoint! While the weather was hot the music was even hotter. Trevor Jonathon Hill kicked off the evening with his one man Band. Following his lead was the acoustic duo of Cory Waller and Emilee Johnson. Both no strangers to the local music scene and a part of one of the areas hottest bands Cory Waller & The Wicked Things. Scott Kirkhart Music played his new release "Old friend". The music video for it was produced by my good friends and collaborators over at TFC Photography & Film. They're working on a highlight video from the night so be sure to watch for that. The show really kicked into high gear with singer songwriter Matt Stell taking the stage. The crowd singing along to his hits like "Prayed for You" and "Everywhere but On". Be sure to keep and eye on them as I'm sure they will be headlining their own tour very soon. Tomorrow I will have the second and final album of the night up so give a follow and check out the pages I tagged for future shows and media. A big thank you to all the area sponsors and volunteers that make shows like this happen. It is no small feat and you often do it without being recognized. This image comes from coal country West Virginia. I was exploring a region around the New River Gorge, away from the fast paced interstates. While winding around the hills and hollers camera in my lap I caught a glimpse of this forgotten tire swing hanging in a tree. It was tucked in a small prairie like area just up a small hill. The ditch full of stagnant water but I needed I higher view as you could just catch the top of the tire from the road. The thought of Ansel Adams on top of his car ran through my head as I climbed on top on mine. I'm sure I was quite the spectacle for the few locals who slowly drove by. This scan is from one of the 5x7 silver gelatin prints I made in my temporary bathroom/darkroom space.

So for the last year I’ve been working on learning the art of darkroom printing. Starting with a basic setup in my bathroom and moved into a more dedicated space. This has allowed me to start learning and practicing alternative processes. This particular process is called “Lith” printing. Without getting overly nerdy with the technical side I’ll try and break it down. With traditional printing you work within a set of parameters that are fairly straightforward. Light, time, and proper mixing of chemistry and you have an image. With lith you basically throw everything out the window. Lith prints can be unpredictable and extremely hard to duplicate. The chemistry is extremely diluted compared to normal processes. The mix can be altered in so many ways to create colors or textures using black and white films and papers. All papers give different results and not all papers will lith. My traditional prints are often 3 - 60 seconds of exposure with 1-4 minutes of development. With lith I’ve been as low as 5 seconds up to 15 minutes of exposure time and from seconds to over an hour of development. The bottles print took an hour of development and over 4 hours of testing before having a first print. I was able to make two prints before the chemistry changed enough and was no longer able to produce a similar print. However the characteristics of this process are unique and often highly secretive. There’s several resources and books available but they can be expensive and hard to come by. Much of the chemistry and papers suited for this kind of process disappeared with the onset of digital imaging but fortunately a few still remain.
