Black River Harbor - part 2
The mysterious missing Lady at Black River Harbor
Retelling historical stories can be confusing at times but legend has it that the Black River is haunted by a young gal named Grace. As the story is told, she arrived from somewhere else outside of the area around 1939. During this time, the CCC was building the suspension bridge over the Black River. Apparently, she didn’t fit in with the local (female) population, they deemed her ‘high affluent’ for the area. Most likely her natural beauty was the reason for not being accepted. However, that didn’t stop the over 200 CCC men who were working on the bridge from admiring her alleged beauty. In particular was a CCC worker named Samuel, who really took a shine to Grace. Envy and Lust are two of the Seven Deadly Sins and most likely rose their ugly head during the ongoing bridge construction.
On one particular day, Grace came to the construction site with a picnic lunch for her & Sammy. From that day forward, it was obvious to all that Grace had made her decision and the rest of the construction crew knew it. As the friendship of Sammy & Grace continued, she rebuffed anyone else who tried to woo her. Jealously became rampant amongst the other CCC guys.
Violent storms are common on and in the Lake Superior area. The spring night in question was one of those nights. Grace was said to be very concerned that day, she knew Sammy was the worker who had the task of climbing up to the top of the retaining poles to attach the cables. As the wind was raging, Grace walked to the site to hopefully calm her fears. As darkness was starting to settle in, she reached the site and saw Sammy, who had just climbed down the pole. So relieved to see Sammy, she ran to him, embraced and kissed him and was gratefully reassured he was safe. Sammy, now concerned for Grace walking home in the dark, retrieved a lantern, lit it for her so she could safely find her way home.
No one after that night ever saw Grace again!!! Countless rumors were widespread, but the girl from somewhere else was never seen again.
Occasionally, there have been sightings on top of the Black River, near the pier, especially during spring that resemble the figure of a young lady.
You Look, You Decide.
