Happy World Whale Day! ๐Ÿ‹๐Ÿณ

Today we celebrate everything whales! Did you know that in the United States there is a program that Whale Watching Vessels can join to become a "Whale Sense" member! Unfortunately every year whales are struck by vessels, endangered by boat speed and distance, and whale watching vessels harassing nearby wildlife. That is where Whale Sense comes in!

Whale Sense means:
S: Stick to whale watching laws (I.E. the Marine Mammal Protection Act of 1972) โš–๏ธ
E: Educate passengers and crew ๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐ŸŽ“
N: Notify officials when animals are in trouble ๐Ÿ“ž
S: Set an example of for other boaters ๐Ÿ›ฅ
E: Encourage ocean stewardship ๐ŸŒŠ

It is encouraged that if you visit the Atlantic Region or Alaska to find Whale Watching Vessels who are a Whale Sense member and are keeping the whales welfare and habitat at the forefront of their mission!

The photo below is from our tour in Juneau, Alaska in July of 2024! We went with Whale Sense member, Gastineau Guiding Company for our whale watching excursion and they were the most knowledgeable and respectful to the animals we encountered! Also their boats are ideal for photographers due to their inside swinging windows and keep you and your equipment dry when it rains (which is did that day)! ๐Ÿ“ธ๐Ÿ’ฆ

Check out Gatineau Guiding Company's website for your next whale watching adventure in Juneau, Alaska!

Happy International Zebra Day! ๐Ÿฆ“

Did you know: There are 3 different species of Zebra (Plains, Grevy's, and Mountain). Pictured here is the Plain's Zebra, Equus quagga, at the Cape May County Park/Zoo in New Jersey. Each species has a unique pattern of stripes and develops their stripes at different weeks in their embryonic development, which results in wider or smaller stripes in the animal. Which also means every unique individual zebra has their own pattern, like our own fingerprints. ๐Ÿ‘

Today is Moose Day! ๐ŸฆŒ

The Alaska moose, Alces alces gigas, pictured here from Denali National Park and Preserve, is a subspecies of moose that ranges from Alaska to western Yukon. The Alaska moose is the largest subspecies of moose.

Did you know that there are four subspecies of Moose in North America alone and seven subspecies throughout the world. ๐ŸซŽ

Reminder, when photographing or viewing any wildlife especially large animals like Moose, it is important to remain in your vehicle or stay a safe distance away while utilizing a telephoto lens. Large animals like Moose can appear docile but can be a very dangerous animal to encounter! If any animal is in distress or is in need of human intervention, please do not approach and call local wildlife agencies to handle the animal.

Today is the International Day of Education! ๐Ÿ““

"January 24th was declared the international Day of Education by a resolution that was passed by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on 3 December 2018. Their sincere efforts world wide have shown promising results in the betterment of an educated individual that constitute a cultured society, which is supported with optimism and opportunities."

Education isn't just about learning in books, computers, or in a classroom. Education is about understanding and learning new cultures and ideas from around the world or even in other regions around your country. As a travel photographer, there is an importance about taking in the culture, community, and lifestyles of the places you visit.

This past summer visiting Alaska, there was several opportunities to learn the 100 year old tradition of dog sledding. At National Park and Preserve there is many opportunities to witness the power and learn about cultural tradition of the dog sled teams! ๐Ÿ•

"At 40 below zero, it can be near impossible to try to start a motor, whereas a dog team simply needs a good breakfast and they are ready and willing to run. Overflow is a common challenge on rivers and trails in Denali. Snowmobiles can get bogged down and sink in this slushy mess whereas a dog team can run right through it and roll in the snow to dry off on the other side. If a machine breaks down in the middle of remote wilderness like Denali, you had better hope you are carrying the right spare parts and tools to fix it! However, if a sled dog gets sick or injured on the trail, you can always rely on the rest of the team to pull the sled while the injured dog can run loose or ride in the sled until they have recovered." ๐Ÿพ

To learn more about Denali National Park's dog sledding teams and the history of this Native tradition, please visit their webpage; https://www.nps.gov/dena/planyourvisit/kennels.htm

Today is Squirrel Appreciation Day! ๐Ÿฟ

In Pennsylvania there are several species of squirrels including the beautiful Fox Squirrel, Scriurus niger vulpinus pictured here. However, the gray squirrel is Pennsylvania's most common squirrel.

Did you know that when squirrels jump from tree to tree, they use their large tails to help keep balance! ๐ŸŒณ

Squirrel populations around the region of Pennsylvania are of high abundance but it is important to keep an eye out for any injured, sick, or possibly young abandoned squirrels that may need some assistance. It is important to remember that all Pennsylvania wildlife is managed by local and federal laws and all rescued wildlife need to be handed over to a licensed wildlife rehabilitator that specializes in small mammals.

If you ever find an injured, orphaned, or sick squirrel please reach out to Acorn Acres Wildlife Rehabilitation in Lancaster, PA, please click the link to donate to their amazing wildlife organization and learn more about them! ๐Ÿฟhttps://www.acornacreswr.com/

Today is Penguin Awareness Day! ๐Ÿง

There are numerous species of penguins throughout the world however the king penguin pictured here is the second largest species and lives primarily in the southern regions of the world!

This specific king penguin photo was taken at the Central Park Zoo in downtown Manhattan, New York! Did you know that the Central Park Zoo became home to the first king penguin ever hatched in New York City in 2015! ๐Ÿฃ

Central Park Zoo is also a part of Wildlife Conservation Society which "uses science to discover and understand the natural world. This knowledge helps us engage and inspire decision-makers, communities, and millions of supporters to take action with us to protect the wildlife and wild places we all care about."

One of these initiatives that the Wildlife Conservation Society is protecting is in Patagonia region, where there is a large population of several species of penguins. Patagonia "faces serious threats, including fishing and oil exploration off the coast and extractive industry and unsustainable agriculture and ranching on land." The Wildlife Conservation Society strives to partner with local government agencies and the local communities to help with the protection, education, and conservation of this region in Patagonia.

Today is Appreciate a Dragon Day! ๐Ÿฒ

Obviously, there is no "real" dragons like we see in medieval folklore or fantasy fiction, however there are "dragons" under the sea!

Weedy Seadragons are found in Australia and are a federally protected species due to habitat decline and impacts from bycatch in the fisheries industry.

However, Aquarium of the Pacific was the first to breed this species successfully under human care, which allows for the pressure of Weedy Seadragons to be collected in the wild to be diminished. Now, Weedy Seadragons can be seen all different aquariums around the world, which provides more education, awareness, research and conservation efforts to thrive!

To learn more about Weedy Seadragons and show your appreciation, please visit the of the Pacific species spotlight page: https://www.aquariumofpacific.org/onlinelearningcenter/species/weedy_seadragon1

Happy World Desert Day! ๐Ÿœ

Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium is know for the outstanding zoological exhibits! One of those exhibits is called the Desert Dome!

We underestimated the size of this zoo and aquarium, as when we arrived early afternoon we only managed to go through 3 exhibits before they closed and we had to come back another day!

The Desert Dome is the world's largest desert habitat at any zoological facility! "The Desert Dome features plant and animal life from three deserts around the world: the Namib Desert of southern Africa, the Red Center of Australia and the Sonoran Desert of the southwest United States. The Desert Dome contains 84,000 square feet on two levels (42,000 square feet on each level). Located beneath the Desert Dome exhibit is the Kingdoms of the Night, the world's largest nocturnal exhibit."

To learn more about the world's largest indoor desert habitat at Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium and what conservation projects this zoological facility is doing, please visit their page: https://www.omahazoo.com/desert-dome

Happy Save the Eagles Day! ๐Ÿฆ…

We all know the Bald Eagle is a symbolic animal in the United States, demonstrating strength, freedom, and independence. Even though population numbers for the Bald Eagle have increased over the years, they are still fighting detrimental issues to their survival.

One of those is lead toxicity. "A recent study revealed that 47% of bald eagles and 46% of golden eagles had signs of chronic lead poisoning, which is the result of repeated lead exposure. As many as 33-35% of eagles had acute lead poisoning from exposure to high lead levels. These statistics came from samples taken across 38 states over the course of eight years" (Slabe et. al, 2022).

Humans can help reduce this impact of lead poisoning to the eagle populations by using lead free ammunition and lead free fishing gear during outdoor sports. Also if you ever see a bird of prey who does not look healthy please call your local wildlife rehabber or fish and wildlife services.

To learn more about lead toxicity in eagles and how you can help, please check out American Eagle Foundation and their page on lead toxicity: https://eagles.org/lead-toxicity-in-bald-eagles/

Happy National Bird Day! ๐Ÿฆ†

Today's photo showcases one of our favorite species of waterfowl, the White-faced Whistling Duck!

The White-faced Whistling Duck is a native bird to South America, Africa and some Caribbean Islands. There are eight different species of whistling ducks, with the Black-bellied Whistling Duck native to North America.

The White-faced Whistling Duck gets it's name from the โ€œwhee-whee-wheeโ€ call they make to communicate with one another.

To learn more about White-faced Whistling Ducks, please visit the Lincoln Children's Zoo's species guide page! https://www.lincolnzoo.org/animals/?page=4
