One of my initial concerns with the 500mm f/5.6 was the theoretical inability to use a TC and still have autofocus (per the Nikon website).

It would appear this is NOT a problem. at. all!

The Red Tailed Hawk was shot at 1000mm using a cheap non-Nikon 2xTC. The bird is about 50 feet up and 100 feet away. I used wide-area (small) autofocus on the Z7.

I haven't had a proper long lens for a while now... well, until today. Just picked up the new Nikon 500mm f/5.6 PF ED.

The autofocus is much better than I was expecting so far (daylight testing in the shadows) and it is SHARP!

After viewing a finished video with the client, I had a real day off today!

I have been watching the terrorist alpha male Hummingbird chase off the other locals for a while now and decided I really want a shot of the inbound missile he becomes when any other hummer hits the feeder.

Yeah, I know, nothing focuses that fast, especially me, so I aimed and focused the tripod mounted camera at an assumed point along the path between the feeder and the tree he likes to use as a perch.

I only took a couple hundred shots, but I did get ONE shot that is somewhat in focus.

I want to get this working in the morning as I want the bird in sunlight from the front instead of afternoon backlight. More to do!

Picked up the new Nikkor 24-70/2.8 S for the Z7 today. I used the f/4 version for some aerial work recently and was blown away. I am expecting to be even more satisfied with the f/2.8 version!

After fighting crappy weather for the last couple weeks, I finally got up in the helicopter yesterday eve. VERY WINDY! It was not as clear as I hoped, but my pilot managed to get me close enough to cut through the haze. Rented the Nikon 24-70 f/4 S from Paul's Photo.

Long day, tired! At least the diversity keeps this job from ever becoming boring! Morning studio and evening location shoots!

A quick edit on Monday just to keep this going! My shoots today were food in the AM (7 is EVIL early Jennette, just sayin!) and a WeHo condo in the afternoon. No pics of the condo yet! 😈😀

Just added a new video to my Vimeo channel. This is a bit of a test, as with the exception of a fade in and out, and a bit of music, this is straight out of the drone.

This is "Paso Robles views" by richardhornphotography on Vimeo, the home for high quality videos and the people who love them.

August 6, 2016 A day off?? I have been rather busy of late, to the end that even when I have a day without actual photography on the schedule, I still have editing to catch up on. Yesterday was a perfect example. A shoot I did in Malibu this week was very photoshop intensive, and since the client wa...

Editing images from a real estate shoot in the hills, I am reminded that while hanging out of a helicopter was really fun, the images I can get these days from a drone are pretty fabulous for a very reasonable rate!

Not to mention this is a great property to highlight!
