It's great when the camera is focused and ready to go when a baboon takes a leap. All I had to do was pull the trigger until he landed. Kind of like a photo I shot at the LA Zoo in 2018.

Dancer between performances. Soweto, Johannesburg, South Africa.
The Nelson Mandela House is a museum, with a stream of visitors in tourism vans and buses. When we arrived there were two groups of dancers in native dress vying for attention and contributions. They took turns performing for about 90 seconds each, with a lot of energy. In between performances they waited for the next tour group to arrive, and that's when I saw this juxtaposition of the modern and the traditional.

We've recently returned from a two week safari in Zambia and Botswana with Wilderness at Heart. It was our second trip to Africa; the last visit was to Kenya. We spent the first four days at Pangolin Chobe Hotel, and most of our time was on the Chobe River.

The activity along the river bank was extraordinary.

Early one morning we found a troop of baboons occupying an extinct termite mound where kingfishers had nested as recently as the day before. The baboons were playing King of the Hill on the mound, with one in particular dominating the game. There was some chasing/bullying involved, but one adult took it a little too far and pinned a juvenile to the ground and drew blood. Another adult intervened, giving the child time to escape and dealing this blow to the bully.

Hey everyone. My interview with Matt Payne on his podcast “F-Stop Collaborate and Listen“ came out today. It’s all about my book The Johnny Chronicles. You can find it on your favorite podcast app, but I suggest watching it on YouTube if you can. Let me know what you think about it!

Winter runoff in Malibu Creek State Park.

This was once a steelhead stream. Oceangoing fish would swim upstream from Malibu Lagoon and lay eggs in this creek and the many others that feed it. The Rindge Dam blocked that path over a century ago, but there are now plans to remove it and other barriers, and restore the ecosystem.
