THE LAST NOMADS
Royal Highland Festival, Bhutan

10 frames from along the Tibet-Bhutan border.

For the past 25 years I’ve been photographing vanishing cultures around the world. Last week I had the incredible opportunity to join the Royal Highland Festival in Laya, Bhutan - where the nomadic tribes of the Himalaya gather once a year at 3,800m.

Staying with the tribes on the rooftop of the world was unforgettable. More from this series to come.

Today I visited Gangtey Buddhist University, where the monks are performing a 25-day prayer. I heard the music coming from the temple — and then I got to see this dance.

This is also the monastery the black-necked cranes circle three times when they arrive in the valley — a blessing, the monks say, before the birds settle in for the winter.

I’ve spent the last week traveling across Bhutan to the border of Tibet where each year the last of the nomadic highlanders gather . We drove for days and slept on floors of Bhutanese families and hiked up to the rooftop of the world . I now remember why I love doing this and why it always restores my faith in humanity.

Here are my favorite 10 photos from this week in Kyoto .

One week in Kyoto and I feel I’ve just barely begun to see it. With over 2,000 temples and shrines, it’s breathtaking.

This city reveals itself slowly — in morning mist on the Philosopher’s Path, in the hush of a bamboo grove at dawn, in lantern light spilling across a thousand-year-old alley in Gion.
