Wildlife Photography Tip

Protect yourself from ticks BUT ... DEET insect repellent damages cameras because it acts as a strong chemical solvent that melts plastics, rubber, and lens coatings.

How DEET Harms Gear

Melts plastics: Body panels, buttons, and dials can warp, pit, or dissolve.

Destroys rubber: Focus rings, zoom grips, and rubber eyecups can turn sticky or break down.

Etches glass: Special anti-reflective coatings on lenses and LCD screens can permanently fog or scratch.

Safe Handling Tips

Wash hands: Always wash your hands thoroughly after applying bug spray before touching your camera.

Spray away: Apply repellent downwind and far away from your camera bag and gear.

Use alternatives: Switch to a Picaridin-based bug spray, which repels bugs effectively but does not harm plastics.
