As parents, being busy is a feeling with which we’re intimately familiar. Our metaphorical plate is usually very full and those moments of just being still and pausing are few and far between. When I have a few minutes to stop go-go-going, it often feels like a luxury to be savored.

And that’s part of why I love this photo. Yes, her shirt says “Milk Maker,” which is awesome, and I happened to see her sitting in this lovely window light which makes my eye and heart happy. But more importantly I was able to photograph her just taking a few sips of water and pausing in the midst of the action.

Already that morning, she’d braided her daughter’s hair, cleaned the kitchen, prepped for dinner, played with her kids, read some of the newspaper, comforted her upset son and wiped away his tears. And I’d taken photos of all of that, but this moment when it was just mom in the frame stands out. It’s a good reminder that all of us are both caregivers and independent individuals at the same time. In the hustle and bustle of life as a parent, it’s so easy to forget that and I want to help you remember that you as a person, on your own, deserve to be documented, too.

You know those memories from childhood of things that you did over and over again? Family routines, regular errands, friends whose houses who felt like your own? And when you think of them you can see them, hear them, sometimes even smell them.

For me, going with my mom to pick up pictures at the photo lab was one of those. I can see the storefront, I can smell that particular mixture of chemicals that magically turned our canisters of film into prints and I can remember the excitement of opening up those envelopes to see how our memories of a trip or a special occasion had been recorded, how we would visually remember it. And so many of those prints ended up in albums that we could thumb through again and again, creating a living story of life that we could access whenever we wanted.

While the advent of digital photography has been amazing in so many ways, I really do miss the necessity of printing our photos. There’s something meaningful and intangible about having a physical print of a photo that a digital copy lacks. And that’s why all of the packages that I offer to families that I work with include printed products.

I know how important prints, albums and wall art are AND I know that we all really do have the best intentions of printing our photos, making photo books, putting together gallery walls. But life often gets in the way of tackling these tasks and our photos languish on our hard drives instead of adorning our walls or in the pages of an album that lives where we can see it over and over again. I want to make the process of moving your favorite photos from the digital to physical realm simple and easy and maybe even a little bit fun. 🙂 It may seem like something you don’t really need when you first think about it, but really it’s at the heart of what I want to give you as my client: the gift of having your family’s visual story as a part of your everyday life.

I’m grateful that so many great folks are subscribed to my mailing list, but if you’re not let me give you a gentle nudge to sign up and a warm welcome if you do. (Just head to the link in my bio, wait a few seconds and a polite little pop-up will ask you to sign up!) I promise never to spam you, to usually send only email per month and to try and share some thoughtful and interesting things you might not see here or on my website. Might be worth a try?

And...if you are a regular reader of my monthly newsletter, you may have noticed it’s been (way) too long since I’ve been in touch. But don’t worry, I’ll be back! Watch for an email from me next week with some thoughts on the new year, family photos and some other odds and ends. Talk to you soon! xx

This project was a joint project between myself and my daughters. It was inspired by my love of early mornings and soft light and a desire to share a little piece of who I am with them--of me as a person and not just as their mother.

I took a series of photos of my experiences of quiet morning light in the summer of 2022. After curating the photos, the three of us wrote captions to describe them. I wrote descriptively and metaphorically, describing what the photos made me think and feel. I asked my daughters only to write what they wanted, to write what they saw, felt or thought about the pictures.

Each photo is followed by three different points of view - Part 4

A whole year of photos? Way too much, you might think. Too many sessions, too much money, way too big a commitment. And why would you even need all of those photos?

These are all reasonable questions and objections to the idea of choosing to work with me to document a year of your life in photos. But maybe I could counter them with a little thought experiment...

Close your eyes and think about November 2022. When your child stood next to you, where on your body did their head reach? What was their favorite silly saying? How big did their hand feel in yours? What did it feel like to run your hand through their hair? What was their favorite book? Where in your home did they like to curl up and snuggle with you? What was their favorite game? Their favorite food? Their favorite thing to do all together as a family?

Now, fast forward to the current moment. How much has changed since then? If your life is like mine, the answer is almost all of it. Instead of just thinking back and feeling the nostalgia and amazement at how quickly life really does change and just how fast it rushes forward, imagine that you had a visual record of all that has changed in twelve months. Imagine you could look back on that year of transformation in 20 years.

And this is why I offer a year-in-your-life of photos--a truly meaningful gift for you and your family to hold on to as life goes on and you all inevitably grow, change and transform together.

Anyone who has ever had to put together an about page on a website can tell how super challenging it can be. It is SO much harder to write about yourself than about someone or something else and then feel comfortable enough with it to put it out into the wide, wide world.

And that is exactly what I did a month or so ago. My about page was so outdated and in desperate need of a revamp and so I made myself sit down and put together a new one. It wasn't easy, it made me feel fairly vulnerable and insecure. Despite those reservations, though, I'm happy to be able to share a more current version of me on my website. (See link in bio!)

And in the spirit of sharing things that are real, a little less polished, but certainly authentic, here are two photos of me from over the summer. I got to cross off one of those big bucket list items my list this summer by doing the Point to LaPointe swim-- a 2.1 mile open water swim in Lake Superior. And it was magical. These are just iPhone snaps, they're probably not the most flattering photos of me (thank you swim cap and wetsuit) and I didn't even take them (thank you !), but they're really meaningful to me. First photo: getting ready to start. Second photos: a little teary eyed and proud of myself with my special person.

Separately-together? As my own kids grow and mature, this seemingly contradictory state is often how we spend time together.

Interests change, independence deepens, a sense of self becomes more and more fully formed and time together as a family starts to look a lot different than it did when my kiddos were small. We now sometimes find ourselves physically all together, but not necessarily all engaged in the same activity.

It's hard sometimes to think of life as constantly moving forward, always changing. (It certainly makes me feel nostalgic and melancholy to know that my now is continually shifting...)

Stopping to acknowledge and appreciate that now just how is certainly easier said than done, but a picture or two to remember it by can certainly help 😉
