With Halloween right around the corner I was looking back at some of my girls' best Halloween costumes. My oldest was Mary Poppins when she was four years old and she was beyond delighted with that costume! Another winner for her was the year she was Flo Jo and meticulously planned out every detailed of that costume! She even got challenged to a race at one of the houses when she was trick-or-treating. My youngest is more than happy to pull a ready-made costume off the shelf at the store. So it’s not so much about the creativity of her costumes and more about the personality she brings to each one. My favorites being the year she was a disco queen and had ALL the moves to go with that one and last year when she was Black Panther. As Black Panther she found all kinds of benefits to having claws- such has grabbing giant scoops of candy and butt scratching.

If you haven’t already, schedule your 2026 family session ASAP! My turnaround time is 3 weeks so November 29th is the LAST session date with guaranteed photo deliver before Christmas! If you are planning to use your photos for holiday cards, make sure you give yourself an extra week to get that done.

Sometimes families wonder why it takes so long to get their photos back. It’s because taking your family photos is just the first step in the process. After I see your family I carefully curate your images and tone/edit each one before putting together your online gallery. And fall is my busiest season! I’m out shooting almost every day, which means I’m constantly adding sessions to my editing queue and have fewer hours in front of my computer. Right now I have 2 preschools and 16 families in the queue. I’m working round the clock to see as many families as possible before the holiday season! But you have to plan ahead because time runs out sooner than you might think.

The weather might not feel like fall, but the busy fall photo season is happening all the same- family sessions galore, school photos at four different preschools, fall mini sessions, and so many farm visits with my Year in the Life families! I'm enjoying a rare day without any photo sessions today. My agenda is just to drink tons of coffee and editing up a storm. Thanks for your patience everyone as I work my way down a super long editing queue.

The weather is ALWAYS a wild card when planning Fall Mini Sessions. In 2021 I wore a tank top for fall mini sessions because it was so hot. In 2022 it was so cold I gave all my clients hand warmers. You just never know what kind of weather you are going to get the beginning of October. But after YEARS of experience my best advice to you, especially for families with little kids, is to dress for the weather we are having and not the weather you want. You might have some pretty cute fall sweaters picked out, and I know how disappointing it may be to have to set those aside. But hot kids are not happy kids. And happy kids look AMAZING no matter what they are wearing. Go for happy and you won't be disappointed, I promise. Can't wait to see you all this weekend!

My favorite photos are the ones that tell a story- photos that don’t just capture what people looked like at a given moment in time, but illustrate the feeling people had when they spent time together. That is really what a year in the life is about! Capturing the actives you love to do as a family and the way each person feels as you do them. The time you spend with your family is so important, but there are lots of beautiful childhood moments that your kids won’t remember. Having an album full of photos of your family memories is the springboard for hours and hours of conversation and stories. When you do a Year in the Life you set a aside time for fun family activities right now AND you get continued connection as you relive your memories over and over again through the photos. It's a deeply personal, beautiful approach to family photos.

Since my girls were little my pumpkin patch rule has always been "if you can carry it, you can have it." So it's really just a matter of how ambitious you want to be. Dream big and don't be afraid to do some heavy lifting.
