Mary Jillian Art & Photography

Mary Jillian Art & Photography Art & Photography I graduated from the University of Alabama at Tuscaloosa in 2008 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree.

Since that time, I’ve worked as a photographer, art educator, and small-business owner specializing in custom photography-based projects. My work includes digital and physical restoration and preservation as well as printing, framing, and crafting hand-made albums. I am passionate about old things and I especially enjoy looking at old photographs. This passion has resonated throughout my life and

career, helping to shape and focus my work. For me, photography adds another dimension to how I experience life and I appreciate how it provides all viewers a unique opportunity to look back in time. I enjoy hiking, exploring and generally spending time outdoors and spending time with family and friends; naturally, these are prominent and consistent subjects in my photography. As an artist and educator, I hope that I can inspire other people to realize and cultivate their own creative talents, as I share mine.

I've been blowing up social media today with a recap reel of my series, Reflections: An introspective journey exploring identity, that wrapped up exhibition at Lowe Mill's 3rd Floor West Gallery this past Saturday.
I can't say enough good things about my experience getting to show my work at Lowe Mill! It was wonderful and a very proud moment for me!
This is a current photo of me at the closing reception. I'm transitioning into a new season of my life as I prepare to give birth to my first baby! I am excited about this new path and role in my life! I'm thankful my first pregnancy journey has been healthy so far as well as enlightening and inspiring! Thank-you to all who have been so encouraging and supportive of me through all the different seasons that have brought me to where I am now.❤️

My series, Reflections: An introspective journey exploring identity, was on exhibit at Lowe Mill's Third Floor West Gallery February 8th to April 1st 2023. It was my second showing of this body of work and a wonderful experience to be welcomed at Lowe Mill by the my new local community! The hospitality and warmth I was treated with by the staff and artists at Lowe Mill made a huge impression on me! I am honored and thankful for the opportunity to share my work at such a unique and prestigious creative organization!
I appreciate all of my family and friends who came to see my work and it was fun to introduce some of my out-of-town friends to Lowe Mill for the first time!

On this day in 1920 my great grandma, Helma, was born in Selma, AL. She would have been 103 yrs old today.
I was able to be with her at her last birthday celebration, 91st!, in 2011.
I have included a few photos from that day of her, with me and with another one of her great-grand daughters and my niece, her great-great grand daughter!
She was 14 when she became a mother for the first time. My Poppa, James, was her first-born. She lived to see four generations of her descendants being born.
Her name, Helma, means protection, and I felt inspired to name one of my reflection portraits in honor of her as I reflected on my strong self.
I hope to create a reflection portrait as her after I welcome my first-born in the coming months.

On this day in 1935 my Poppa, James W. Hamrick, was born. He would have been 88yrs old today.
I wanted to share a few of my reflection shots side-by-side with a few of my inspiration photos of him.
I'm thankful for all the time I got to spend with him and all the memories I have with him. He definitely influenced me in so many ways and taught me a lot, including how to sew.
I love and miss him! Happy Birthday in Heaven, Poppa!

I'm posting this very late but, on this day in 1918 my great-grandmother, Josephine, was born. I did not make a reflection portrait of her for my exhibit but, as my hair has been growing back out I thought I could try for an impromptu reflection shot.
I love and miss her and I'm thankful for the time I got to spend with her. Happy Birthday in Heaven, Grandmama❤️
