Huntsville Photographic Society's monthly competition was last night with the theme being Street Photography. This was particularly tough because I just don't have a lot of experience in capturing everyday life and candid moments in public places. All unstaged moments with people, strangers. The judge was tough too, a professor of photography and a street photographer. He detailed the decisive moment in photography, and why it was important in street photography.

I submitted 2 digital color photos and 2 black and white photos.

My photo of a family at Land's End in Cornwall, UK won 1st place in Digital Color.

And then, my photo of Santa Claus walking down a street in downtown Huntsville, Alabama received an honorable mention, as well as my Digital Black and White photo of a jogger on a crosswalk casting a shadow in downtown Huntsville, Alabama.

Join me at the Hear to Be Seen event at The Orion Amphitheater on Wednesday September 2nd from 5 to 8pm to celebrate North Alabama artists with an evening of art, conversation, and live music. My photo of Music By Sylvia will be 1 of 28 photos of local artists on display that night!

I'm humbled to be included in this event! Kudos to all the artists involved, and thanks to the Huntsville Music Office, WLRH 89.3 FM/HD, Huntsville Museum of Art, The Orion Amphitheater, and Shedrick Pelt for putting on such an amazing event!

The Orion Amphitheater has called upon artists, photographers and musicians to collaborate on a photo session for the Hear to Be Seen exhibition. After some prodding, I took some photos of friend Sylvia Dean at Madison County Nature Trail last weekend, and one of those photos made the cut. Only 28 photos were selected from local artists! My photo of Sylvia sitting on a rock at Madison County Nature Trail will be displayed at Orion, then Huntsville Museum of Art, and Huntsville City Hall.

The other photos in the set were taken at Bridge Street at the underground parking garage. As a non portrait photographer, this is exciting to me. I just don't take photos of people if I can help it! I don't have flashes, softboxes, backdrops, or anything like that. And people are more difficult than a waterfall or a mountain range. Anyway, we spent an hour at Bridge Street and then probably 20 minutes at the Nature Trail before the rain came in. I learned a lot.

Here's the photo and a few others we considered along the way

Huntsville Photographic Society's monthly competition was tonight with the theme being Close Up/Macro photography. My photo of a bunch of crisp $5 bills received 3rd place in black and white digital. In a sea of flower and bug photographs, my photo caught the judge's eye. I really enjoyed the judge, it was his 1st time judging for us, he was great, and offered insight into his selection process. Next month's theme is architecture...
