Over the past two years of Iowa's99 I have visited 26 counties, some more than once, and I've photographed over 55 different parks, prairies, wildlife and conservation areas. I've never done a photography project and what I'm learning, much like anything else, is that you don't know what you don't know.
Every step is giving me new information, new feedback and new ideas. Thrilling, right? Absolutely but also overwhelming and confusing sometimes. Knowing what ideas to latch onto and which ones to let go isn't always cut and dry.
My biggest lesson so far is that I can take all the pretty pictures I want but if I want people to care, I need more. I need a story and I need connection beyond the one I have with nature.
Iowa’s99 started with a camera and a map
but somewhere along the way, it turned into something more. It's more about slowing down, visiting with locals, sharing what I’m working on, and getting recommendations for places I shouldn't miss. It’s still about Iowa’s parks and landscapes—but the people I meet are becoming just as much a part of the story.
I look forward to sharing those stories through future posts, a podcast and a blog, as well as a potential YouTube channel but that's a ways down the road. For now, I'll be sharing more about where you follow along in the coming weeks.
