I was finally able to snag some time to watch this incredible documentary.
It gives a such a raw picture of motherhood the difficulties, and the joys...such a beautifully filmed story of the postpartum period. And really takes me back! 15-22 years later.. I found myself remember my own postpartum experiences tearing up relating and laughing along in other moments.
This is filmed in Maine I worked previously with both midwife Holly and Elise in this film when I was first in Midwifery school.

The story behind this picture-- Women work so hard!

🔸 This photograph shows a young Mother, exhausted from spending hours making matchboxes, a pile of which can be seen on the table. At her feet is a young, sleeping baby covered by a blanket. Picture taken In Whitechapel, London circa 1890. For such homeworkers engaged in the sweated industries there was no division between work and home life. Match-box making was amongst the lowest paid work. The industry primarily employed women and children who could expect to work an average of 16 hours per day. For every 144 boxes made they received 2 pennies. This photograph appears in an album with a number of other prints depicting sweated labourers and London's poor. Such albums were often compiled by charities to raise funds and inform the public about the plight of those living and working in London's poorest areas, such as the East End. 🇬🇧

So true. Don't be in a hurry to get this season over with.. once this season is behind, you then will see how very short it was.

Imagine how intense hunger must feel when you’ve only ever known complete satisfaction...

Imagine how lonely a crib must feel when you have only ever experienced the cramped tight embrace of your Mama’s womb...

Imagine how deafening silence must be when you have never not heard the beating of your Mama’s heart...

Let’s all have grace and patience for the babies as they adapt to life in the big wide world. These first few months should not be a race to be separated as soon as possible. This season too shall pass 🌿

Two years ago I had the chance to take a 16 hour childbirth educator training. Because I've been in full time midwifery school, it took me the full two years plus a month extension to finish the certification through CAPPA. It was quite involved. I received my certificate recently and wanted to share.
I'm not planning on doing classes right now but I'm happy to have completed this and be another resource in our community.

Such an important thing to remember. The years are truly short.

Such an important thing to remember. The years are truly short.

One of the saddest things I read over and over is mothers' complaints about how exhausting breastfeeding is. The truth is it's parenting that's exhausting, the full-time responsibility of it.

Breastfeeding gives you an excuse to put your feet up umpteen times a day, you can even sleep while you're at it. What else can instantly calm a crying baby? On tap knockout drops that blissfully flood the pair of you with a rush of oxytocin. Breastfeeding is not the culprit.

I fear that mothers can't slow down to appreciate the value in keeping still to breastfeed because they are too impatient with what seems like inactivity. Stop rushing about! Nurturing is the priority and slows you to a standstill purposefully to help you cope with all the hard work of taking care of children.

Something to think about and look into especially if you are trying to establish your milk supply.

Let me be clear, you are a powerhouse!

No matter where or how you gave birth. No matter what anyone says to you or what lies may pop up in your head. You created, carried and birthed that baby you are holding now. You are an absolute boss!
