Some moments are impossible to put into words.
Unless you’ve lived through the loss of a baby, there are simply no words to explain the emotions that come with finally holding your rainbow baby.
It isn’t just happiness.
It’s happiness tangled up with heartbreak.
It’s gratitude mixed with grief.
It’s looking down at the baby in your arms and knowing there is another baby who should have been here, too.
And somehow, you learn to carry both. 🌈
This beautiful mama and I have grown so incredibly close through a bond neither of us ever wanted to share — the loss of our babies. There is an understanding between loss moms that doesn’t require words. Sometimes a look says everything. Sometimes a hug says what words can't.
And there were many tears shed during this session. Tears for the babies we wish we could have held. Tears because after everything we've walked through, we get to hold them in our arms.
Because when you have a rainbow baby, you aren't just living for your miracle.
You are living for the baby you lost, too.
You carry them into every milestone, every little moment, and every breath of gratitude. You love the baby in your arms with your whole heart, while carrying the baby you lost in that same heart.
So when I look at these images, I don't just see a beautiful newborn and mama.
I see a mother who survived something she never should have had to survive.
I see a rainbow. 🌈
And I see a love that loss could never take away. 🤍
To this mama — I hope you always know how deeply I treasure the friendship that came from two broken hearts understanding each other in a way few ever will.
