For anyone following along, and this certainly isn't photography related 😬but just a quick update on my son:

Since my post back in March, we were still very much on the struggle bus with him and we were referred to Caravel Diagnostics Center here in Rockford. The psychologist diagnosed him with Social Communication Disorder (SCD) and Anxiety. 🤯

My first question was: What in the world is SCD???????
The easiest explanation is that he struggles with carrying on conversations in a socially acceptable way. For example, you might make a comment about the sky being blue and he will respond with wanting chicken nuggets for dinner versus continuing to talk about the sky or the color blue.
They recommended some accommodations for school and going to play/talk therapy to address mostly the anxiety.

He was seeing the therapist on a weekly basis for awhile and she made an observation based on their interactions that needed looking into. 🤔
We were referred to the audiology department at Speech-Language-Hearing Clinic at NIU in September.
Meanwhile school had started back up and he was struggling in a BIG way.

The News:
The audiologist noted that although his hearing is fine, he is not processing noise, conversations, directions when there are distractions, competing noises, or too many people are talking.
They call this Auditory Processing Disorder. Anxiety often comes with APD, when you can't hear but people think you can....well, duh!
He can hear, but his brain doesn't always interpret the messages or where they are coming from.
🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯
Take into consideration a school room with 15-20 bodies making noises, interrupting, or all the random sounds a school can make.....

Suddenly it ALL made sense.
Since his diagnosis we've been able to make some big changes and he has had an amazing turnaround!

I do not foresee re-opening the studio at this time, but I still very much appreciate all of you that had supported my photography studio through the last 10 years.

This announcement is hard to make...it's one I've been putting off as long as I can, but I think it's finally time to make it official:

The studio is closed.

There were a lot of factors that went into this decision but we, my husband I, felt actively running the studio was just too much, especially with everything going on here.
I'm still active as a school photographer and yearbook advisor. I will also be taking on sessions selectively between now and through the summer, I just wont have a designated space anymore. 😔

Thank you to everyone that has supported my business through the years or continues to! I'm excited to continue on this adventure of life and maybe we'll bump in to each other at like Hobby Lobby or on the river walk. :D

With his permission, I'm sharing this photo and parts of his story with you.
I want to preface this by saying he is now home and doing well, but it has been a rough couple of months leading up to this point.
End of October, early November my son started experiencing recurring stomach pain. After it continued for a few weeks my husband and I began to think there was something more than elementary age angst. We took him in to rule out constipation which is a common problem kids his age has. He didn't fit the typical box so we left without testing thinking maybe it was just anxiety and we needed to be more aware of schedules, situations, etc.
But it continued into Dec. So we checked in with his P*P over holiday break. She sent a consult over for GI, otherwise ran bloodwork - everything was normal.
Then he began refusing chiropractic adjustments and then his dental cleaning and usual activities were hit or miss. His complaints of pain were increasing, they were daily, in some cases all day long. We thought maybe it was his diet and made some changes...the complaints got worse so we backed off.
Eventually we did get in to the GI sooner than originally scheduled after a series of events following an ER visit at the end of January. Without any other testing aside from what the ER provided, the specialist ruled it "constipation" and sent us home with instructions. Anyone familiar with a home clean-out will know the gist. Except he was refusing at home and to be honest I was struggling accepting it really was "just constipation". In the meantime, the complaints were worsening. He was eating even less. We were able to move up his follow-up GI appointment to last Wednesday, 2/8. The GI ordered a new xray, new lab work, repeat labs, and a few other tests because no one wants to keep dealing with an anxious Mama😅. The xray was the first to come back and showed he had more "burden" than the previous ER xray showed and recommended inpatient treatment while also considering his reluctance to follow instructions at home. We were admitted that night. The first NG tube fell out early the next morning and they tried without it most of the day but it became clear they needed to step it back up so a new tube was inserted by the end of Thursday. From that point, there was a lot of back and forth, not tolerating the medications, slow progress, not enough progress, is this enough progress?... We were finally discharged yesterday after 4.5 days, on Sunday.

Before his hospitalization:
He was not vomiting. He was not having accidents. He was not distended that we could tell. He just had complaints of pain and decreased appetite.
When we were still there on Day #3, I knew we had made the right decision to admit, this was more than we could have dealt with at home for a number of reasons.

This was hard. The before was hard. The during was hard. And now we are on the other side and hoping we are done this is still hard. I could go back thinking about all the things that could have been different, but this was something I think we both needed. He doesn't want to go back there so since we have been home he's been following instructions to a "T" and I've been taking copious notes to make sure we are making the necessary changes and to keep tabs on if the constipation was hiding a deeper issue.

Thank you all for the prayers, encouragement, and most of all your patience. In the midst of all of this I also went back to school (that was planned and set up before all of this started...). Lots of juggling happening here right now for sure!
