Something fascinating about creatives is that eventually we forget how precious our work is. For Emily, I imagine a basket is routine. A collection of thoughtful hours. An experiment. A pleasure, but not earth-shattering. Florists eventually learn that their flowers can be a bit manhandled. Painters paint over finished works that seem perfect to any other eyes. Emily sets her armful of baskets on my studio floor as if they aren’t woven of grown gold and the fibers of an ancestral art.
But for me! Imagine having the pleasure of photographing these works of art, as well as the artist who conceived them! And, even beyond that, to find a friend. Now I can look at her work and not only appreciate her mastery, but I have the gift of being so incredibly proud of her at every turn.
I’m so thankful that my own work has brought me closer to so many craftspeople, artists, and small business owners. What an amazing group, those who are weaving their own destiny in this world, committing to a life of curiosity and creation. To support a small business is to support the spirit of possibility, the joy of craft, and the power of community.
In a world that often feels too big, small businesses are a quiet magic that connects us all. They’re born from dreams, nurtured by careful hands, and sustained by hearts full of passion. How lucky I am - how lucky we all are - to know so many talented souls who pour their inventiveness into this world. A basket weaver, a potter, a leather worker, a coffee shop owner, a florist, a graphic designer, a musician, a chef. These are not easy jobs, not simple roads in a world that seems determined to go big.
I’ll be here, keeping my heart closer to home. It's there in the studio with Emily. It's in a local coffee shop. It's at the art fair. It's wandering the farmers market stalls and picking out apples. It's the community that makes life remarkable, don't you think? ♥️
