A pair of 5x7 tintypes for Dana and Cole ✨ It’s always so nice to see Louisvillians bring out-of-town family to the studio! Lately I’ve had guests from Morgantown, Brooklyn, and Carbondale - and many more! Thanks and for your enthusiasm for my collections of antique photos and general oddities. It’s a pleasure to share!

Deborah and Stanley, one of my favorite portraits from Mother’s Day weekend 💕 This portrait features the painted backdrop by my wife , inspired by the original wet-plate photo studios in the late 19th century.

Back in 2019 I was making tintypes in my backyard and at festivals. Deva, Amelia, and Pearl brought their 7-year-old tintype back to the studio to make an update on Mother’s Day weekend. It feels so special to make keepsakes and commemorate big moments with families and friends alike. Here’s a new 5x7, where Deva holds their first tintype I made. Check out that detail! This was actually something people often did in the 19th century- they’d bring photos from the past - or of people no longer present - to be part of the portrait. This is nearly my 4000th plate, y’all!!

Alex, Aja, and Matt - three solo portraits from the last month. There was so much happening throughout the convention, it's hard to believe now, looking at the quiet, timeless power of these images. I think the process of posing, as I compose the image and insert the plate in the camera, may contribute to this feeling - like the world slows down for a bit. What do you think?

Take a look at this tintype with a painted backdrop of Churchill Downs before the twin spires were added in 1895.

Have a great Derby 🐎
