I can’t believe I just wrapped my 10th year in business! 🤯 I wanted to share a few stories about what helped me get to this point. Intuitive moments nudged me to start my business, but it was synchronicities that kept me in it.
By 2017, I was a couple years in, and honestly it wasn’t working. I wasn’t profitable, constantly stressed, trying to make it all work without enough clients or income. I started applying to go back into production. I felt in over my head.Â
Then some wild things happened.
At a photography convention in Vegas, I literally threw my name into a hat for a giveaway. The best part is I had run out of business cards, so I used my AAA card 🤠And somehow, it got pulled! I won a website review with a well known wedding photographer in the industry. His feedback was honest and made a significant impact. I followed up after to ask if he or anyone he knew needed an assistant. That’s how I met Lacie.
Lacie is an incredibly talented wedding photographer, and it just so happened she was looking for an assistant! I worked with her at beautiful weddings across California for the next four years. She taught me so much about professionalism and attention to detail. It was especially nice to work alongside someone, something I had really missed since working for myself.
Around the same time, I got hired to shoot events for a new Monica + Andy store in Santa Monica. I was so grateful for more consistent work. One day at the store, I introduced myself to a pregnant woman and handed her my card, didn’t think much of it. Two weeks later, I was working a wedding in Santa Barbara. During family photos someone approached me and said, “Didn’t I just meet you at Monica + Andy?” (And, full circle, it was one of Lacie’s weddings.) That pregnant woman (who now has 3 babies) became a regular client for years to come and has since referred me to her friends and family. Forever grateful we crossed paths.
It was those “what are the odds” moments that kept me going, the ones you can’t explain, a mix of chance and serendipity. (Continued in comments)
