Standing tall in a vast empty field with great strength is never an easy thing to accomplish. You are open to all the elements that travel through for having no protection to surround yourself with. Becoming weather-worn over time, you may lose some of that strength, not realizing it was slowly taken away from you over the aging years and transforming you into a hard, impenetrable rock.

How long do you stay this way? How do you find a way to soften? But still, stand firm like you once did? Can you take control of your strength, or do you continually allow the elements to mold and shape what you become?

“Ain’t no mountain high enough.” What is a famous lyric could also be a motto for our self-growth. Tall and large in scale, the mountains pose an immediate visual block on what’s in front of us. To look at one from its base sure makes it an intimidating foe, using its beauty and grandeur to entice us to take the step and begin our ascent to see what’s at the top.

So how many steps will it take to get to the top? How many uphill battles do we all come across in our daily lives? Do we have the determination to summit whatever mountain lies in front of us in this current moment? I believe we do. It is all a mindset. We must work on a strong foundation we build for ourselves every day, similar to how this mighty monolith has built theirs.

I like you have my days where it seems like I am climbing my mountain and hitting switchbacks at every turn. It can be frustrating, demoralizing, and hopeless at times. When will the trail straighten out and become level, I sometimes ask. And this is where the mountains become great metaphors for the bigger picture of our journey. What if it was an easy ascent to get to the summit? It wouldn’t be worth the journey. That all the sweat, blood, and tears we pour into our mountains climb will undoubtedly bring us to a revolution of how strong we are and how we can accomplish whatever our goals are each day.

So keep singing that lyric, as it's a great song.

Today the layers of fog cut through the mountain landscape like light rays shooting through a forest of Redwoods. Continually changing the landscape by the second, these layers create an atmosphere of mood, quietness, and an ominous tone. Slowly drawing you into its grasp to the point you can only keep exploring and hoping to see what unveils next when the fog lifts.

What is it you come across on your daily journey that you begin to see once the layers lift around you? Is it something that makes you smile? Or something that has you wishing for the fog to come back? For me, it is more the curiosity of what’s going to appear and unveil itself as the fog lifts. Whether it is good or bad that’s shown, it will be a learning lesson to use for my next steps forward.

Coming more into view, these cold mountains start to open up through the trees inviting us into their wonderland and revealing more of the intricate dichotomy than what we could see from afar. A ballet is played out in front of our eyes as we witness low lying fog draping the snow-dusted forest as far as the eye can see. This temporary weather is doing its best to affect the permeant landscape that’s lied here for years, disturbed only by each season that comes.

I know personally that season can all take a toll on our well-being and mindsets. Having lived in the Northeast for two-plus decades, I have come across my fair share of weather patterns. How about where you live? How does the weather affect your state of mind as the seasons change? For the better? Or for the worse? Maybe the same?

No matter what the seasons bring, it is essential to get outside, breathe in Nature, and appreciate its beauty even if it is only temporary. Allow your mindset to release those endorphins that bring joy to your life, as we do indeed live on a beautiful planet.

Our trail today has us moving out of the forests and leading us into the open expanses of a cold winter. Snowfall has draped mountain ranges wide and far, creating a magical harmony between snow so soft, imprecise, and temporary resting on top of something so hard, rigid, and permanent—these two opposites coming together to form the beauty that lies in front of us.

The Duality of this is well observed. As we in our own life can be so flexible and temporary in our ways of everyday thought, pleasure, and life experience, but at the same time, we will dig our feet in the ground and take a permanent stance on our viewpoints with no room for growth.

Funny how that works. Maybe we could take a cue from nature in mixing that temporary and permanent to allow the growth of all kinds and, in turn, form a beautiful being that’s reflected every time you look in the mirror.

The contrast these beautiful trees create is something I love coming across on my journeys. Standing out from the green shades within a forest, they quietly shout out from their white bark to formally invite me in. My eyes gaze their way in awe as I suddenly feel like I am around royalty.

Layered in baggy hiking clothes of multi-colors and a warm, bright hat that no one would wear outside of the winter forest for how silly I look, I feel embarrassed that I am not in my Sundays’ best clothes one should wear when meeting Kings and Queens.

Like an old Wiseman who is the keeper of the forest, they emit an aura. Captivating in their appearance as they reign over the woods in clusters together. We never speak to each other, keeping only the silence of thoughts in our minds, taking in what these wise old trees have to say, and leaving here with another life lesson to carry forward with on the rest of my journeys.

As we leave the forest, what lessons have you taken from your journeys that you put into practice each day?

To me, there is something about coming across a wall of trees that always fascinates me. Strength in numbers is no doubt evident. They all stand tall in quiet silence and create a formidable display. You might say that nature is trying to show herself off in the patterns she creates and shares with us. To look closer and deeper beyond.

These hold much weight for me today as it reminds me of the walls I put up. Ones that won’t allow me to crossover into new beginnings, new ideas, and new experiences. Barriers that hold me back through designs and patterns I do that little by little chip away at my potential to be the best human I can be.

Nature can be our best mirror sometimes. It is reminding us of the importance of taking care of ourselves through its simplicity. A wall of trees is a beautiful sight, but a wall from within us is never.
