Tell us a little about yourself and your experience as an Allied Aid volunteer.
Jill: I’m Jill and I work in Los Angeles as a documentary photographer/college professor. I was motivated to help with the refugee crisis when I saw the heartbreaking photo of Alan Kurdi, the toddler who drowned and his body washed up on the beach. The most rewarding aspect of the work was meeting the refugees. They are going through a very difficult time but they were kind and welcoming to us. On our particular trip, what surprised me most was the power of social media. Friends and family donated money when they saw what we were doing via social media and we were able to distribute more aid than we expected. I would say if you are thinking about volunteering, go for it. I am so glad I did! (See Jill's recent work here: Jill Connelly Photography)
Pat: My name is Pat Connelly and I volunteered for this trip for several reasons. I had planned to do volunteer work as soon as I retired and when I found out my daughter was going on this trip, I wanted to join her. It was great working with my daughter - as a photojournalist, she is a true professional and always tells a compelling story through her photos. I was proud to be with her on this mission. An added bonus was to see the positive way the people responded to her - they were not afraid to have their pictures taken because she was so warm and friendly with them.
Allied Aid is currently seeking volunteers to join our upcoming distribution trip teams.
