While shooting the Travel Ch. show “Sand Masters” I had the chance to visit Pelelu, Palau. A bucket list event!

Near the end of World War II, as the War in the Pacific was nearing its end…the Marines entered the Paula chain of islands, on their way to Japan. The southern most island Pelelu, where the Marines tried to land first, still bares testament to the brutal surprise the Marines felt as withering fire poured from the jungle and caves. Blood Beach, Orange Beach, etc… are now the names of the beaches. Tanks, landing craft and ship wreckage still are stuck on the reef and shores.

Pelelu Island is now a National Heritage site. Held in status as a memorial to the several horrible weeks of fighting and thousands of dead on both sides.
