I almost said no to the thing that changed my entire career.
Years ago I was “just a photographer.” Knew how to frame a shot, light a scene, work with a model, and that was the box I lived in. Then a friend asked me to direct. My first answer? Absolutely not.
Here’s what I learned when I said yes anyway:
Your real skill isn’t your medium. It’s the way you see.
The framing, the lighting, the eye for story, that travels. Photographer to director. Editor to creative director. Designer to founder. The label you gave yourself isn’t a ceiling unless you let it be.
So if there’s a project that scares you a little — pitch it. Direct the commercial. Shoot the campaign. Take the leap. You probably already have what you need.
Now go push yourself.
