This may go against the norm of what I usually share, which are happy celebrations and new beginnings. But as a photographer, I feel like all experiences in life are worth documenting.
Last February, weeks before the pandemic hit, Gus lost his beloved grandmother (as he knew her: Mimi) to Alzheimer’s. We flew to Texas to say goodbye and grieve her loss, but also to celebrate her life and the impact she had of those around her. Gus asked me to take photos throughout the day because he told me he didn’t want to forget it.
And so I did. And this is what I witnessed that day. Family, love, pain, happiness, gratitude, grief, connection, and strength.
I chose to shoot only with my 35mm film camera so that I could remain present without worrying about getting the perfect shot and just focusing on the feeling. I’m really glad I did. ❤️
The older man you see in the first shot and at the end of the carousel is Papa, Mimi’s Husband. As he and Gus sat on the couch, Papa leaned over to him and said, “She was the love of my life.”
