If you’ve spent most of your life living in New York City, have traveled extensively for work, and grew up in the Midwest, that means you’ve lived through the 9/11 attacks and its aftermath, as well as blizzards, floods, hurricanes, tornados, and city-wide summer blackouts. You’re undoubtedly resilient and mentally tough.
But, for me, it is wasn’t until 1/8/24 that I understood, as a recent SoCal transplant, how fierce Californians are. They face wildfires and earthquakes with guts of steel.
The devastation of the wildfires is astonishing. As of Friday morning, the current stats (via NYTimes/LATimes) re: structures destroyed in the Eaton and Palisades fires is 10,300+. And over 33,000 acres burned—nearly the size of San Francisco. At least 10 people have died, and include a church deacon, an engineer, a bloodmobile driver. Over 150,000 people have been forced to evacuate. And it’s not over yet.
And while there is so much good—with first responders risking their lives, neighbors helping neighbors, small and large business stepping up to help—it is distressing to see people ( #47) taking this crisis as an opportunity to lampoon our leadership, ridicule the victims, disperse misinformation, and continue to deny the massive role of climate change.
Not only are there scores of those who lost their homes and livihoods who are hard working “regular” folks, but indeed, there are many people in the entertainment industry who lost everything in an instant. It makes no sense that we’d value less the loss of those whose tv, films, and music buoyed us through the pandemic and uplift us when we’re low. We crave and consume what they create and yet have so little compassion for them when they’re in crisis. What a heartless response to tragedy.
None of us are safe from the effects of climate change. 2023 was the hottest year on record. But voting for lawmakers who accept that science is real and advocate for change is our best defense. You can learn more and participate in change by supporting/following the
And I hope you’ll join me in donating whatever you can… no amount is too small… to help support relief efforts in this region.

Three Time Grammy Award winner and Thirteen Time Nominee is heading into 2025 with two new Grammy Nominations bestowed on her by the 67th : One for Best Classical Solo Vocal Album (Wagner: Wesendonck Lieder, with Maxim Emelyanychev and Il Pomo d’Oro), and Best Opera Recording (Puts: The Hours—along with her fellow divas Renee Fleming and Kelli O’Hara, with Yannick Nezet-Seguin leading the performances).
This level of achievement is so beautifully awe inspiring that it’s difficult to comprehend, but when you combine, as Joyce does, the highest level of artistry, great passion, and dedication to one’s craft, the results are bound to leave listeners breathless.
There’s far too much to express about Joyce that will fit in a compact social media post, but what I love most about her, is that her achievements as a performer are matched only by her devotion to giving back. And giving back for Joyce includes her extensive philanthropic work that harnesses the power of music and its ability to edify, connect, and elevate. Working with underserved communities and young people around the globe who don’t normally have access to the world’s greatest performers and music education is one of her passions.
People often ask me if Joyce is as warm, generous, electric, and kind as she appears in interviews, and the answer is “YES.” She is a rare bird, indeed. A unicorn amongst unicorns. And while her many awards and accolades lend even more gravitas to her credits, (did I mention she’s an Olivier Award Winner too? That’s the UK’s equivalent to America’s Tony Awards) they’re not the reason she’s devoted to her work, nor why she expends so much energy constantly innovating in the world of music It’s that she’s a joyful, thoughtful, endlessly creative, hard working, musical genius who can’t help but do her part to make the world a more loving, equitable place.

Here’s my antidote to the stress we feel about this complicated world: Let’s celebrate the artists, creatives, and change makers whose beautiful work edifies and lifts us up. And today, I’d love to offer a deep bow to my dear friend, author, and journalist .fingersh Her gorgeous memoir “Stay,” has just been named one of Magazine’s Best Books of October 2024. About Stay, the renowned #1 New York Times bestselling author wrote, “So rich, wise, funny and beautifully written. Hard to put down once you start.”
 About the incredibly talented :
There’s something so comforting about relationships that have been nurtured over decades.
When I first met Julie, we were in our teens, and she was then, as she is now, a force of nature. As the editor of our high school newspaper, she was already crafting her career as a writer and journalist. Always wonderfully articulate and outspoken, Jules was the epitome of a young person destined for greatness.
After high school, we went our separate ways, headed for college on the East Coast, but years later, we bumped into each other at a press conference for Paul McCartney, while she was writing for Billboard and I was a producer for PBS, and we were both living in New York City. I remember the delight I felt, to have this beaming spirit near, once more. Over the years, we’ve always stayed in touch, the circumstances of our lives diverging, but our connection solid and true.
I was delighted for my old friend to become a client, as well, when we convened in Northern California to create a set of portraits in preparation for the release of her memoir.
The images we created together capture what I love about Jules...that big hearted, soulful spirit that makes everyone who has the benefit of knowing her fall in love with her instantly. She’s a powerful force, and what a gift that the world now has the chance to get to know her better via her memoir.
Pick up a copy of “Stay,” as soon as you can. I know you’ll be happy you did.
Jules, Bay Area

Happy Birthday to Frank John Hughes. 11/11. Photographed by me in Zelle Am See, Austria, 2024.
When our wonder-mutt Theodore was still alive and well,a he’d greet my beloved Frank at the door after a day apart. His body loose and tail wagging, T knew that the arrival of Frank meant it was time for the Guy’s Only Walk.
He loved his quiet time with F, his ears pricked forward, his tail swaying ever so gently like the Queen’s royal wave. Together, they took the most leisurely of strolls, chatting with neighbors as they went…
What a good dog teaches you, is that a healthy relationship is a balanced one: What you put in is what you get back. And Theo, a dog I’d trained to do both service and therapy work, was the ideal partner. Even in his unruly, early days, when annoying each other was a daily occurrence, we both worked hard to understand each other’s language and build trust.
After years of me and T against the world, (and before F) it was tough to imagine that we’d want to make our duo a TRIO.
But then, there’s no one on the planet like Frank John Hughes. Accomplished, deeply respected, hard working, incredibly talented, wise, soulful, and very, very, funny, F is as devoted to the ones he loves as they are to him. That he can be so fully present to me and my ambitions and dreams, while making magic happen with his own work as an actor and screenwriter, is something I’d never experienced before. Rather than walk through life with self obsessed blinders on, he’s a master at being present.
The year before the pandemic hit, we lost our incomparable Theo to cancer at 16. As we said goodbye to him at home that evening, our hearts broke as his breathing labored—our wonderful vet there to help him through. I was convinced that Theo could sense that I’d grieve him in a manner unlike any other loss I’d experienced—but he knew he was leaving me in the very best hands—the human soulmate I’d confront life’s thorniest challenges with and experience the greatest joys. That Frank has mourned Theo along with me, missing him as deeply as I do, is yet another reminder of why I love him like no other human I’ve ever met. ❤️

It’s the greatest privilege to collaborate with and celebrate inspiring leaders! I first met Daisy Esparza when she won the Couture Portrait Experience I donated to the 2024 Gala Fundraiser. Daisy has been a Board Member of since 2022. And from the moment we first chatted, I knew she’d become one of my favorite people. Like me, she was raised by a fierce immigrant Mother, who is also her hero! Despite the fact that she’s exceedingly accomplished in her own right, (Daisy is a Manager, Risk and Financial Advisory, , and a graduate of UC Berkeley), it was talking about what her Mom and her beloved siblings have achieved that energized her the most.
As a Board Member of Girls Inc., Daisy devotes her time to uplifting and empowering girls. So, on this International Day of the Girl, I’d love to offer a round of applause to Daisy, Girls Inc partners and supporters, and everyone helping to create a world where female leadership at every level is the norm. To name just a few: .network
This excerpt from an interview w/ Daisy via
“Daisy Esparza began working with Girls Inc. as an eighth-grader.
Girls Inc. works in partnership with schools and at its own centers to focus on the development of the whole girl. The organization, with an Orange County office in Santa Ana, does this by providing mentorships, creating a pro-girl environment and offering evidence-based programming.
“Girls Inc. helped me build a roadmap for my future,” said Esparza. “It really comes down to social and emotional learning. Girls Inc. gave me the space to be myself, to feel comfortable in my own skin, to be confident.”

Hearty, Happy Birthday wishes to Dale Dye Jr. Decorated Marine Veteran of the Vietnam War, actor, writer, and founder of Warriors Inc. (Hollywood’s premiere technical advisory company specializing in portraying realistic military action in Hollywood films and TV). His work as a technical advisor, and that of his team, is renowned throughout the film industry and deeply respected by those in the military community and beyond. From Academy Award / Emmy / Golden Globe / winning films and TV, you’ve seen his work in iconic, groundbreaking projects including and most recently,
Dale Dye on founding , his mission as a technical advisor, and his experiences working with young actors:
“I was smart enough to know that the popular media is a huge influencer. And so if I were to work in that medium, maybe I could make a difference. The Warriors mission was simply to shed some well-deserved and long-overdue positive light on the men and women who’ve worn our military uniform.
Other people think all I have to do is teach you how to hold a weapon or wear your uniform. Not in my book. Not at all. Because a performance comes from the heart, and the heart has to have a certain amount of understanding. I put them in total isolation. I make them live in a hole and keep them up all night. I create a world from which they can’t escape, and if I’m really good, and I am, I take them so far out of their comfort zone, they believe it. Once I’ve done that, I can fire blank ammunition at them, and they’ve lost the concept that it’s blank. When I see the light go on in these young people’s eyes and they begin to get it and they begin to understand the service and sacrifice of the people that they’re portraying, to me that’s the reason to keep doing it as long as I’m physically able.” - via NYTimes

Just a week from now, one of Orange County’s favorite sons will be celebrating a birthday, so why not get on the Birthday bandwagon and wish Coach Greg LeFever Happy Birthday now? Coach Greg is the guy who lights up a room with his warm smile and genuine expressions of care for his community. This Yale Grad and former Collegiate Football Player—who earned his M.B.A /J.D. simultaneously—is also a Hollywood sensation.
As an actor, Rich Ting, a 4th Gen Asian American and LA native, made his name playing diverse roles in high profile movies and TV including “Lone Survivor,,” “Warrior,” “Man In The High Castle,” “Old Man,” “Partner Track,” “Waco,” “Rush Hour,”…the list goes on. And his newest project has him starring alongside in Season 2 of (A production) as Jackie Ming, powerful drug warlord that goes head to head with Stallone’s Dwight Manfredi.
Via
“I remember growing up and not seeing anyone I could identify with on the TV or the big screen. To know I am now on the forefront of representing males on camera, is really heavy to me. To the point where I don’t like to think about it, to be honest.”
Ting was not seen in the first season of the popular “Tulsa King” show, but the character of Jackie Ming was inspired by some actual Triad gang activity in and around Tulsa, Oklahoma.
Asked if he was afraid about negative stereotypes surrounding his character, Ting answered, “No, that’s the great thing about this character, it’s based on truth. How can something be a stereotype if it’s true? What I take away from Jackie Ming is that he’s a boss, he’s intimidating, he’s powerful, he’s strong. He’s a king in his world. And he’s invading another territory to conquer and take over. Usually, we’re the opposite. We’re the guys getting conquered, getting destroyed. What I try to do is find the silver lining, which is not very difficult in this situation.
It’s been my hope that the younger generation, they almost don’t understand why it was weird for an Asian to be cast as a police officer, or a firefighter, or a lawyer, or a husband. The goal is to get to a point where they don’t understand, why is that weird. Why not?” —NW Asian Weekly
Congrats to Rich, someone who can’t help but make waves—the good kind—wherever he goes!

Actor and Filmmaker James Madio has been tearing up the screen since he was a 14. When your first film is directed by the great Steven Spielberg (“Hook”) and you’re starring opposite Dustin Hoffman, Robin Williams, and Julia Roberts—and you crush it—it makes sense that you’d go on to star in a slew of award winning films and high profile tv and film projects from The Basketball Diaries, to Band of Brothers, The Jersey Boys, The Offer, and now, this fall: The Featherweight, (a passion project for the Bronx-born Madio—he and his collaborators have been developing this indie for nearly a decade) and the HBO / DC series The Penguin (opposite Colin Farrell).
, directed by , with a screenplay by proudly premiered at the , and has since garnered a slew of glowing reviews via RogerEbert.com & more. To give you a sense of what a gorgeous piece of work this film is, check out ’s review for
“Kolodny tells the story of the real-life former champion boxer Willie Pep’s effort, starting in 1964, to make a comeback at the age of 42 // as part of his effort, Willie () has recruited a pair of documentarians to follow him around. Kolodny’s feature doesn’t merely depict the era but masquerades as a product of the era, deftly and poignantly emulating the style of a mid-sixties documentary. Kolodny has rounded up an extraordinarily committed cast of actors. // Madio’s deeply inhabited portrayal of Willie comes off less like an impersonation than an incarnation, and Wolf nearly takes over the movie with the force of Linda’s pressurized desires.”
Fans of award winning mini-series will get a kick out of seeing Madio’s dear friends and Band brothers Ron Livingston and Frank John Hughes (a fellow Bronx native) starring alongside him. The film is currently slated to screen in LA , CT, (the title character’s home state) and NYC. Do whatever you can to see it.

I love when a Branding Session evolves into something deeply personal. And when celebrating Mom becomes the primary focus—I’m reminded of the great power of photography to create a gorgeous, unforgettable time capsule.
My first convo with my client Daisy Esparza was notable for many reasons, but what struck me most was what she shared about her beloved mother. An immigrant from Mexico, Sylvia raised four children, three of them the most strong, accomplished, tender hearted sisters you could ever meet. Daisy and her three sisters hold their Mom and one another in such high esteem that nothing is more valuable to them than time together.
That Daisy came to me via her win of my Girls Inc Gala auction donation of a Couture Portrait Experience, made our collaboration even sweeter. Daisy is a Girls Inc Board Member as well as an alumnus. founded in 1864, “equips girls -particularly girls from low-income communities and girls of color – with the knowledge and skills to effect positive changes in their lives and to become leaders who will change the world.”
Supporting orgs that cultivate young leaders has always been an important pillar of my own charitable work, so I’m honored to donate to whose mission is more important than ever.
