Gemsbok in Light. Namib-Naukluft NP, Walvis Bay, Namibia. Very proud and humbled to announce that my image “Gemsbok in Light” won Highly Honored distinction in the 2022 Nature’s Best - Mkapa Awards in the Art in Nature category. Check out all the winners ➡️ . My friend, , whose African aerial imagery has long inspired me, won the Art in Nature category, which was fun to see. This was the first photo contest I ever entered and I was encouraged to do so by the words and the work of three other incredible award winning photographers I have traveled with, studied under and learned so much from, , , and . Thank you all! Sony a1 • 70-200mm f/2.8 GM OS II + 1.4x Extender

Study Hall. Dublin, Ireland. Surely one of the most impressive libraries in the world and, quite frankly, one of the most impressive rooms you will ever see, the Long Room in the Old Library at Trinity College is worth the visit if you are ever in Dublin. I was able to get this image, without any people save for the ghost of an old guard walking the right hand side (look closely!), by heading straight for the Long Room in the first tour group of the morning and bypassing the Book of Kells at first. It also required a Platypod to get the long exposure given the low ambient light (tripods are not allowed) and a 12mm lens to capture the full scene. Sony a1 • 12-24mm f/2.8 GM OSS

Pelican Flight. Walvis Bay, Namibia. The first part of our morning boat trip was spent with pelicans in flight. Several of us were using flash setups which created some surprisingly good impact on the images - at least surprising to me given how infrequently I use flash for wildlife photography. Might change that going forward. This would be the last flash photography I did with my own flash on our trip, though, sadly, as I managed to dump the flash into the ocean an hour later. Sea Lion Artistic. Walvis Bay, Namibia. A young sea lion captured here while swimming through the waters of Walvis Bay. We saw hundreds and hundreds of them during our boat trip that morning and it was a lot of fun watching all their behavior and interactions. But, it was very challenging to get a single animal isolated in the frame so I was quite happy when I was able to find this particular sea lion off by his lonesome at relatively close range. I was also experimenting with flash that morning, something I rarely ever do in wildlife photography. In this case, though, that extra bit of light really helped make the image and allowed me to slow down my shutter speed considerably to get the soft streaking of the water. Namaqua Strike. Dorob National Park, Swakopmund, Namibia. A hungry namaqua chameleon is released back into the wilds of Dorob National Park after some rehabilitation time under the watchful eye of Chantelle Bosch, our guide from Tommy’s Living Desert Tours. If you ever have the chance while in Swakopmund, I highly recommend this tour. It will open your eyes as to the many incredible creatures who inhabit this harsh environment and how man, inadvertently at best, puts this fragile ecosystem in danger. It was a great day looking for “the Little Five” and taking in the majesty of the pristine sand dunes just off the Skeleton Coast near Swakopmund. Sony a1 • 400mm f/2.8 GM OSS

Serendipity Bullseye. Skeleton Coast, Namibia. On my second afternoon flight from Swakopmund heading south along the Skeleton Coast we had a bit of weather all the way through Walvis Bay. For the most party we flew above the low ceiling of clouds and in a few spots the cloud cover became less pronounced so that you could get shots of the dunes below with the clouds interspersed. This was one of those shots. But I had absolutely no idea I was going to capture a rainbow prism as the sunlight passed through one of the clouds! And, even crazier, that the shadow of our helicopter was going to be perfectly placed in the bullseye center of that rainbow. It was a perfect accident that helped turn what was actually a fairly mundane image into something g pretty special, and certainly memorable. Sony a1 • 24-105mm f/4 G OSS

Tree Family. Deadvlei, Namibia. I don’t know why, but there’s something that just mesmerized me about this particular grouping of camel thorn trees in Deadvlei. I think it’s because their configuration in space feels like actors on a stage. You can feel this when looking at the photo - I hope! - and you certainly feel it while there in their presence where the scale of the scene is so grand. For a brief moment every morning, just when this image was captured, the sun manages to illuminate the whole wall of the distant dune while these tree “actors,” and the clay pan upon which they stand, remain shrouded in shadow. It’s pure magic to watch it unfold. Sony a1 • 70-200mm f/2.8 GM OSS II

Oryx Down Below. Skeleton Coast, Namibia. Another image similar to yesterday’s post of oryx in the Skeleton Coast dunes south of Walvis Bay. This time in color and closer up with a longer focal length. The long shadows the oryx throw are even more pronounced here in this image and I love the tracks you can see each animal has made in the otherwise pristine dune. Sony a1 • 24-105mm f/4 G OSS

Oryx on the Move. Swakopmund, Namibia. The highlights of my time in Swakopmund were two late afternoon helicopter flights where we headed south through Walvis Bay and on down through Sandwich Harbor, occasionally directly along the Skeleton Coast and occasionally just a bit inland over the endless dunes. The highlight of these highlights was finding a group of oryxes on both flights and having the chance to watch them move amongst the dunes. While this image also works in color, I much prefer it in B&W. Sony a1 • 24-105mm f/4 G OSS

Devil’s Fork Morning Glow. Sossusvlei, Namibia. We left Sossus Dune Lodge pre-dawn on this particular morning to recover our cameras left out all night shooting star trails and the Milky Way in the Devil’s Fork area. Confirming that all had worked properly by scrolling through Playback mode on the LCD screen, I then looked up to see what was next to be photographed. The light had begun to bleed into the sky as Civil Twilight approached sunrise and this scene caught my eye. There’s just something different and unique about the light in Namibia. Light and Line Redux. Sossusvlei, Namibia. This time with S-curves. Love the shadows in this otherwise brightly lit, early morning scene. The contrast is so stark. Sony a1 • 24-105mm f/4 GM OSS
