The History of Holga

The Holga camera was designed by T. At the time, 120 roll film in black-and-white, was the most widely available film in mainland China. The Holga was intended to provide an inexpensive mass-market camera for working-class Chinese. The rapid adoption of the 35mm film format due to new foreign camera and film imports virtually eliminated the consumer market for 120 film in Chi

na. Seeking new markets, the manufacturer sought to distribute the Holga outside mainland China. Within a few years after the Holga’s introduction to foreign markets, some photographers began using the Holga for its surrealistic, impressionistic scenes for landscape, still life, portrait, and especially, urban photography. Users appreciated the Holga for its lack of precision, light leaks, and unique qualities, which forced the photographer to concentrate on innovation and creative vision in place of increasingly expensive camera technology. In this respect, the Holga became the successor to the Diana and other plastic cameras previously used in such work. Recently the Holga has experienced a renewed interest due to the increasing popularity of plastic cameras and the creativity and uniqueness of film photography in addition to a continuing counterculture response to the increasing complexity of modern cameras.

During this Q&A with Sports Photographer Otto Greule, he shares why WE ALL LOVE HOLGAs!...

--------------------------
What is your personal, 'off work' camera, and why?

"My Holga. I love the absolute simplicity of it. It boils the photographic process down to the paramount decisions that are not unique to photography; what subject are you choosing and why do you care about it? What viewpoint are you choosing? How are you delimiting the scene? Exactly what moment in time are you depicting? These are the same fundamental choices that you would have to make if you were a painter. There is also a hidden benefit of using a toy camera; you can work on the street relatively uninterrupted because you do not appear to be 'professional.' If for example, you are photographing near a monument or archeological site, the security people (tripod police) will tend to leave you alone, and photo-gear enthusiasts who want to talk shop will just sneer and move on, leaving you free to concentrate on making a photograph."

As the National Football League season sweeps in, sports photographers across the United States take to the stadiums to create iconic images. In a Q&A below, veteran sports photographer Otto Greule shares insider knowledge & outstanding imagery to give insight into his fast-paced, visual craf...
