I have returned to New York City tonight, making my pilgrimage to honor the anniversary of 9/11. Tomorrow morning I will stand in the spaces I did twenty years ago, documenting a day of tragedy and trauma, confusion and concern.

I have come to be present, to remember the many people I met, spoke with, observed and shared their stories with the world, that day and for many days after.

I have come to hear the reading of the names, the people I spent hours and hours looking for, climbing over and traversing the unstable pile of rubble that we now call Ground Zero, hot under my feet from the fires burning underground. I spent hours searching for the people who belong to those names. Hours hoping to witness their rescue or document their treatment in the trauma center hastily up in the ferry terminal.

How do I explain the utter quiet of the trauma center, full of medical professionals? How do I explain their expressions, the deepening anxiety as they realized no one was coming?

I saw one rescue that day. One. A firefighter injured by falling debris. One, over the course of hours. I still struggle with that number.

I have come to honor the 26-year-old version of myself that finally understood how to use the well of fortitude and compassion within myself, born from childhood trauma.

I will stand in the spaces, open to this moment that will never come again. I will document new faces, speak with new people, learn new names, and share stories again. - Krista Niles]
