A great photograph taken on the 19th of October 1940, of Farrier Fred Barnes shoeing 'Tommy', the Auxiliary Horse Transport's favourite horse.
Holding Tommy's bridle is Driver Ted Ortan who served in the Boer War as well as the First World War. In the background is Head Farrier Albert Drew at the forge, making new horseshoes.
Auxiliary Horse Transport companies were specialised military units, primarily active during WW1 and WW2 within the Australian Army Service Corps (AASC) and British Army, tasked with moving supplies, equipment, and personnel via horse-drawn wagons. These units functioned within lines of communication to support operational logistics.

Workmen laying a wooden water pipeline near Lewiston, Idaho, c. 1891.
Before steel, concrete, and PVC became standard, many water systems used wooden stave pipes — built almost like long barrels, with timber sections held together by metal bands.
Once filled, the wood would swell and help seal the joints, turning a material that seems fragile today into a surprisingly durable piece of early infrastructure.
