In high school, my photo teacher imparted to his students that your image does not start nor end in the camera. It starts in your mind, materializes in the camera, comes to life in the dark room, and ends repeatedly with every viewer. Today’s dark room is Capture One and Photoshop. The common misconception is that Photoshop is only used to retouch blemishes and even skin. In reality, Photoshop is where we can fine tune tones, colors, direct the eye, brighten and darken areas, and choose how the image/portrait is expressed. While the industry requires deliverables that shine without any further work, and I respect that from a business standpoint, I personally do not consider any of my shots truly complete that have not gone through today’s darkroom. It’s a true pleasure to get to focus in on a shot of a given subject, spend time with it, and bring it to *full* life. You can see the unfinished version of this shot in the recent reel posted. If you ask my friend Ferrari Talent (Rick “Rock” Ferrari), he’ll tell you commercial casting wants natural shots that feel unposed, like a snap shot in life. Another way of saying the same thing is that casting (like almost everyone on earth) values authenticity. Many of us don’t consider that when we get headshots. We think we should strive to achieve an aspirational standard. We think we need to look perfect.

And so we stiffen up.

But an authentic moment is far more captivating than a performative one, and expressing honestly clearly exemplifies an inner freedom, which everyone, in the blink of an eye, associates with true happiness. And, like it or not, commercials, first and foremost, are selling you happiness.

The problem is that people see a camera pointing at them and stiffen up. For that reason, it’s up to their photographer to connect them back with their humanity. Keep them moving, doing, engaging…literally anything but posing. From there, a little adjustment of the head tilt one way or another and you have pure gold. Freedom -> Authenticity -> Perceived true joy. This formula is irreplaceable, and certainly no amount of aspiring to be accepted will ever achieve the same results. Love yourself first, then find a photographer that can create a space for your authenticity to blossom. Go!

And it has very little to do with how much of the body is in the frame, and everything to do with the relationship to the viewer.
