We loved working on this project!!
Repost • Ice Illusions Ice Studios Throwback: One of my favorite projects from the 2019 Dr Pepper TEN “Mountain Man” national ad campaign. 🧊

The art department first created a molded glove to capture the actor’s exact hand shape. Our job was to transform that mold into ice.

We hand carved four identical ice gloves, each one meticulously matched to the original mold. That alone was a painstaking process, but it was essential. Film productions require continuity, so if one glove cracked, melted, or failed during a take, an identical replacement had to be ready without anyone noticing.

Here’s a fun detail: the first glove you see in this reel isn’t ice at all—it’s the molded version created by the art department. The very next shot is one of the hand-carved ice gloves. Most people never notice the switch.

What I love most about projects like this isn’t just the carving—it’s the planning, the ex*****on, and collaborating with incredibly talented creatives who all share the same goal: creating the best shot possible. It’s amazing what can happen when every department brings its expertise together.

Fast forward to a week later, I’m at Fonco studios, see a space ship set, and I call Parker and go “New Idea! You are an elf thats gonna save christmas. I have no idea what the scene is yet, but I bought you an elf costume on Amazon, can you come play tomorrow?”

We improvised the scene, shot it out in 30 minutes, and it was a full movie army team effort. The biggest shout out goes to our lights, camera, and production design because we scrambled this thing together!

The rest is movie magic history!

In his three-decade+ career, Fon has worked on over 40 feature films. As part of Industrial Light & Magic's Model Shop team, Fon contributed to STARSHIP TROOPERS, GALAXY QUEST, and the STAR WARS, TERMINATOR, MISSION IMPOSSIBLE, and JURASSIC PARK franchises.

In addition to visual effects, Fon has also worked in the art departments of THE NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS, JAMES AND THE GIANT PEACH, CHRISTMAS CAROL, and CORALINE, to name a few.

In recent years, Fon has loaned his talents to feature films, including INTERSTELLAR, GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY, and ELYSIUM, as well as the hit TV series THE MANDALORIAN.

Fonco Studios is constantly adding new options to our rentals! We have several stages, a green screen, standing sets including our famous Spaceship, western bar, and castle, pop up sets including our medical offices and elevator, and we can create any set to fit your project. Rentals are now in Peerspace, Giggster, Set Scouter, and Avvay!
