Larry Williams began his career in the early 80’s as a photographer based in New York and London. He was one of the original artists to show at Light Gallery in New York, the city’s first Photography Gallery. His work has been exhibited at The Museum of Modern Art, Centre Pompidou (Beaubourg Museum) in Paris, The Santa Barbara Museum of Art, The Chrysler Museum, and The Chicago Center for Contempo
rary Photography. His earlier innovative experiments with photo emulsions on canvas and objects won him The National Endowment for the Arts Grant and participation in The Whitney Museum’s Independent Study Program in New York City. His photos regularly appeared in Rolling Stone, Esquire, New York Magazine, NYT Sunday Magazine, The London Sunday Times Magazine, and House and Garden. William’s photos of Young Mods in London were included in the Rolling Stone Book. He shot numerous magazine and album covers, bands, fashion and lifestyle editorials, as well as advertising campaigns. Williams worked with most of the big names of the 80’s, including Prince, Madonna, Iggy Pop, Debbie Harry, Brian Eno, David Byrne, Brian Ferry, Hall and Oates and many actors, producers and other power players. In 1984 Williams photographed Prince in a rented Spanish-style house in Beverly Hills, CA. The now famous shoot produced two of the most iconic Prince images ever taken. He went on to create album covers for Prince’s legendary bands The Time, Sheila E.,
and Apollonia 6. Prince was so taken with his work he ended up using the photos for publicity, posters and merchandise for his biggest album ever, Purple Rain. He also asked Williams to direct the music video for the #1 smash hit “When Doves Cry”.
