Well done New Mexico! Deb Haaland is an absolute badass. I wish nothing but success for her in the November gubernatorial election.
After serving in Congress and then on the national stage as Secretary of the Interior, she’s already proven she can navigate power, lead through complexity, and take on the old boys’ club without losing her values or her backbone. Her qualifications aren’t just impressive — they’re historic.
There’s something powerful about seeing Indigenous women not just finally getting a seat at the table, but leading the damn meeting with wisdom, grit, and generations of perspective this country desperately needs.
Turns out when you stop shutting out the people who actually know how to care for land, community, and future generations, government starts looking a little more hopeful.
Stay educated. Think critically. Every election matters.

This photo is heavily misidentified in many historical archives and commercial listings.

Despite often being labeled as a "Crow Indian Chief," nearly all of the information attached to that title is incorrect.​ Here are the accurate historical details regarding who took the photo, when it was taken, and the true identity of the man pictured:

• ​​Photographer: Alexander Gardner

• ​Date: 1872

•​Location: Washington, D.C.

• ​​The man in the photograph is not Crow. He is Long Soldier, a prominent leader of the Waco tribe (a division of the Wichita people). He was photographed by Gardner in 1872 while visiting Washington, D.C., as part of a southern plains tribal delegation.

​The numbers scrawled at the top left of the glass plate negative read "747" (written backward on the emulsion side).

​When the famed frontier photographer William Henry Jackson compiled his massive Descriptive Catalogue of Photographs of North American Indians for the U.S. Geological Survey in 1877, this exact negative was formally cataloged as entry No. 747: "Long Soldier, Waco".

Over the last century, a combination of clerical errors, misfiled prints, and commercial print sellers misreading the catalog records led to the image being mistakenly circulated under the generic title of "Crow Indian Chief."
